Hello everyone! I went for a level 2 ultra sound today and found out I'm having a baby BOY!!! :) I'm excited to finally know what I'm having! During the Ultra Sound the Dr. told me that everything looked completely normal except that my umbilical cord only has two vessels instead of three! She went on to say how rare this is and I started freaking out!!! She explained what potential problems could arise because of this and I began to really get worried... I have found a little info online and most of it has been positive so I'm feeling some relief... has anyone here experienced this with pervious pregnancies and if you have what happen? Did you have any abnormalities in the heart or chromosomal issues? The Dr. did say that I may have to have several U/S to monitor the babies growth just be safe... If you have any info please let me know!! :) Thank you!

I personally am not pregnant with a child that has a two vessel cord but a good friend of mine just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and she dealt with the same thing as you. My friend had to get ultra sounds every week to monitor her baby;s growth and they expected her to be born on the smaller side ( she was actually born at 8.6 lbs) Now that the baby is born they are testing her kidneys to see how they are functioning, we still haven't heard any news as to the results of those tests. So far the baby is doing very well. I wish you the best throughout your pregnancy :)

Hi, I am so glad that I found this thread. I just posted mine. I just found out today that my baby girl has the same cord issue. Its known as SUA. My doctor told me that I will have to have stress tests from 32 weeks on and more u/s to monitor her growth because she is at risk for growth issues inside the womb. I also found that it only occurs in .2 - 1% of all pregnancies.

Yes, my doctor told me that I will have to have an ultrasound from here on out at each appointment. I have another ultrasound on the 26th due to him refusing to face forward so they were unable to get his heart and face. He was measuring at 10oz at 19th weeks (the day I turned 19 weeks) and everything I read said that the average for 19 wks is 8.5oz so that made me feel alot better.

I was extremely freaked out at first because with it being so rare there's not a lot of information on it and everything I did find was all worst case scenarios and when I first found out that was the LAST bit of information that I wanted to know.

So glad to have found someone else that is going through the same thing and so close in pregnancy.

I know, I was so happy to see this thread. We should really keep in touch through out our pregnancies :)

My little girl was measuring 10 days ahead of schedule at my u/s so I am hopeful. But the gal told me today that it may be an issue as she gets bigger ... Probably because they require more blood being pumped through their bodies I would assume.

I agree. When are you due? I'm due Jan 17th.

Do you have a journal?

No, I dont know how to make one.... I am technically due 1.20.12 even though my ticker is off a bit. I changed it after she measured ahead :)

There is a section from Pregnancy Journals if you're ever interested in making one. It's a lot easier for people to keep up with. Either way I will def be checking in on you!! The link to my journal is in my signaure if you ever want to check it out.

I was really emotional when I first found out and read a lot of negative stuff but now I refuse to look at anything that's not positive. :D Trying to keep as much stress as possible from my mind! :D

Hi Ladies,

I came across this thread while just going through the Pregnancy Groups forum. I too have a SUA that was diagnosed at the 18th week ultrasound. I did have NT screening and blood test. Everything came up fine (low risk) and the ultrasound doc (a maternal-fetal specialist) went over any potential problem area very carefully during the ultrasound. I was told not to worry.

I just had another ultrasound at 30 weeks. The baby measured at over 3 lbs and about a week ahead. Once again they looked over all problem areas and nothing came up except for excess amniotic fluid. I'm told that I'll likely have another couple of scans, but not to worry too much.

It's good to find a few more people going through the same thing right now.
