My daughter started cooing early. I remember making sounds to each other for what felt like 5-10 mins. About 9 weeks old she completely stopped. She doesn't make a single sound all day long except cry or laugh. She's unbelievably quiet. I'm getting worried?

She does laugh and smile and make eye contact. She also seems extremely sensitive. If anyone holds her except myself or her dad she will scream and scream until we take her back.

Please can anyone reassure me that this could be normal?

Sounds perfectly normal to me, I'm sure she is just experimenting with different types of sounds (including no sounds!) and wanting to be held by you or her dad also sounds normal.

I would worry if she suddenly stopped interacting with you at all (no coos or smiles or eye contact or anything) or if she is screaming all the time even if you're trying to soothe her.

She sounds just fine to me :)

Thanks.

I am extremely worried though. It just doesn't seem normal for her to be so silent all of the time.

Has this happened to anyone else? Its been over a month now without a single sound

My son onlyou ever made a noise when he was crying. Even now at 16 months he says dada and eh. It's perfectly normal for them to stop things when they are learning other things like rolling over, sitting up or walking. If you are worried pop along to your HV to have a chat xxx

I spoke to my HV & she suggested I go to GP for a referral to the pediatrician.

I understand that she may stop to focus on something else but from what I can see she isn't really doing anything new. No interest in rolling or her feet or her voice.

When I do speak to her she seems agitated and often screams or cries until she's back up onto my shoulder.

Hope everything is OK, sending you good thoughts! <3

Marmoset - thank you I really appreciate it.

Just a brief update - the GP seemed concerned & referred us to the specialist. It's a 3 month waiting list though so hopefully we see improvement before then.

Also I think we have some slight progress although I'm not sure - she has started to screeching in a high pitch voice tonight. She does it back & forth with me if I copy her. She also does it if I put her down on the floor. She doesn't seem upset it's as if she's practicing using her voice but then sometimes she just starts crying after a few screeches so I'm not sure.

I was so happy when she started doing it as I guess it's better than silence but it's still not cooing. Every morning I wake up excited and hopeful that she might coo back at me again.

hope every thing will be ok and she will have more progress and nothing would be wrong with here. keep us updated please

Thanks.

She's 18 weeks now - still silence.

I can see why you might be concerned. It does seem a bit odd that she would suddenly stop cooing altogether. My daughter is 9 weeks old and has days where she coos more than others... but there is always at least a little bit of cooing each day. Hopefully this is just a phase and nothing to worry about, but if it persists I would definitely push for answers. Good luck, mama. :hugs:

Emma was super chatty as a small baby, made lots of different noises. Now she just screams and yells (happily) or cries or blows raspberries. My other kids did this too.
