Hello! First time on a forum. I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge about the proper abbreviations to use but again, first timer!

I'm 26 years old, have been off birth control for a year and a half, and my husband and I have been actively TTC for 8 months. 3 times now, my body has shown me VERY clear signs of pregnancy, only to end in a colossal, bloody bright red period full of clots and blackish 'sandy stuff' (so so sorry if TMI) that hit the bottom of the toilet 12 DAYS before my period is due. I have NEVER in my life experienced spotting between periods, my boobs have never been sore during my period, and I absolutely always get my period every 27 days like clockwork. I would have hot flashes, headaches, swollen aching breasts, and right around day 20 I got light brownish-blackish spotting. I did some internet research and learned that that is most likely 'breakthrough bleeding'? And then the next day or the day following would come the uber-period...

I've been searching everywhere for an answer, or even one other person who has experienced such a thing. At this point I'm terrified something is wrong with me. I've booked an appointment to get checked out (besides the last pap & checkup I just had with my doctor; I did let her know I was ttc & she said I look healthy as a horse) but that's about a week away.. I can't handle it! Has ANYONE experienced anything like this?

Hi and welcome. Let me see if I have this correct. You have the sandy dark spotting 12 days before your period?? And then your period shows up?

Spotting between periods usually is indicative of low progesterone. An herb that is fantastic for that is Vitex. You should google it and order a bottle. I use the solaray brand, twice a day. Without that I spot at 9 dpo. Low progesterone can definitely prevent carrying a baby. If you can get to your doctors office 7dpo to have them test your progesterone you can get a definite answer.

How long were you on birth control? You can't count those periods as your normal cycle because it is a controlled cycle and has nothing to do with how your body will react off of the pill. I read somewhere that BC disrupts progesterone.

Anyway, low progesterone is a simple fix. Get the Vitex and see if you have spotting your next cycle. Also, that may not be enough to hold your pregnancy. That is why it is important to get it checked through the docs office so you can have a higher dose of progesterone prescribed. I have the cream, but the prescription is a much higher dose. Good luck!

Thanks so much for that, I'll ask my doctor as soon as I see her on Tuesday to check my progesterone levels, and I'll look into vitex/solarary. To answer your Q, no I experience the spotting at around 14 days before my period, and then comes the sandy stuff/tons of fresh-looking blood 12 days before I'm expecting my period, but it IS my period. Full blown. It just comes that early- I do not get a period at all 12 days later when I should. It's as if my body starts all over again after the pregnancy is dumped. (that's just my guess) I've had regular periods since 14, and started bc at 19. Got off them at the age of 24 so I was definitely on them for quite a while! This past year and a half though, besides the 3 incidences I described, I've had no spotting whatsoever. Gosh I hope it's a simple fix. Sorry if my posts are convoluted or hard to read.. I'm not much of a writer lol. But again thank you so much for your reply it really means a lot. Thought I was going to be left hanging! :)

I really want to understand you to give you the best advice. So let me ask you:

Say you ovulated today..how many dpo's (days past ovulation) later will you have spotting? And then when will the fresh blood show up? Have you gotten a BFP yet, ever?

It is confusing because you say the spotting comes 14 days before your due period which will put the spotting right around ovulation.

How many days between ovulation and spotting/bleeding do you have with no blood at all?

I ask because from what you are saying it sounds like a luteal phase defect, that is also related to low progesterone and is an easy fix.Your luteal phase is from ovulation until your next period.

So I went back and reread your first post and if you are spotting at day 20 then that would be 7 days before your expected period. Basically your hormones are out of wack causing you to shed your lining early. Maybe a baby was trying to implant but it is so hard with low progesterone. Keep me posted on what your doctor says!! They usually like to test it on a specific day of your cycle.

Gah I seriously suck. I'm totally off on my count I gave in more than one way.. I cant believe how stupid I feel right now but I just re-looked at my phone's calendar and I counted from my last day marked in there to :sex: for good measure, not from the actual current date.

I'll just go through this last time exactly what happened. I had the 1st day of my period Feb 17. then on March 9th I saw the spotting. The bright red sandy period came the next day on the 10th. I was just standing at the fridge and ON it came... so right you are, that's 7 days before period was due.

I've never gotten a positive on a pregnancy test. I never make it that far. What you're talking about makes so much sense. I just looked up Vitex and what it does; sounds like progesterone IS the most likely suspect. I am a little confused- every site I look up to buy the Vitex, includes a disclaimer saying NOT to take the product if you are pregnant or may become pregnant...? I'm going to hold off on buying it until I see my doctor in case she prescribes me something instead but man, I hate to wait even that long. Another month lost. oh well. I'll for sure keep you posted!

I have my bottle of vitex right here and it says not to take while pregnant. It is perfectly safe to take while trying to conceive. Because it is balancing the hormones needed to conceive. In your case, your progesterone. Most acupuncturists say to stop once you get your BFP. My acupuncturist told me to stay on a week after my BFP last cycle because my tests were so faint. So, if you decide to take it what you will do is, take it your entire cycle, beginning as soon as you get the bottle no matter what CD you are on so it can start correcting things right away.

And you should visit your doctor 7dpo (days past ovulation) and have your doc test your progesterone and don't let them get away with not doing it!! Some doctors actually don't. I have seen post with women complaining.

It is the lack of progesterone that can cause a miscarry. That and chromosome defect. Possibly other reasons. So, if your progesterone is low, they may have you come back in a couple days for a retest. It is a good idea to order Wondfo brand pregnancy tests from Amazon.com. You get like a pack of 50 for $20. Begin testing on 8dpo because the test are super sensitive. Whenever you see even a hint of a second line I would have my progesterone checked again and if it's low have them write you a prescription for progesterone. I would recommend natural progesterone, the only reason I am not is because the prescription is much much higher dosage.

I have had 2 chemical pregnancies due to my low progesterone and I am sharing all of this with you because I don't want anyone else to go through the joy of getting a BFP and being pregnant only to lose it a few days later. I wish I knew all of this before. Not trying to talk your head off! :hugs:

I will say this, when I first began my herbs they were Vitex and Dong Quai. And were the only things that made me have a period naturally with no artificial chemicals such as birth control. It was my actual body doing what it should because it was being nourished and not forced.

I can understand your worry, but keep in mind that western medical doctors will most likely not know about and natural methods such as Vitex.

And also keep in mind, that out planet is packed full of natural ways too cure every illness. How great is that? A lot of people are quick to dismiss the natural remedies we were meant to utilize and instead go for more dangerous products.

I am also speaking from a professional level because I am studying to be a psychotherapist and will have the ability to prescribe medicine if I chose and I know about the harsh side effects some medicines carry thanks to psychopharmocology classes.

Solaray Vitex is the Vitex I use and the only one I trust. Because it has the true herb in it. Other brands market Vitex fruit which is more of a mixture. Solaray is a great brand. Do you live in the US? I do, and I get mine from my local health store. But, they are also sold on amazon. Do you have a whole foods where you live? It may be there. And here are a couple of links to learn more about Vitex:

A couple of these are post about women with PCOS like myself, but women with PCOS more likely than not have a progesterone issue such as it seems you do that is why I put the link there. I really hope you give it a try and if you can, visit a fertility acupuncturist, preferably one that does electroacupuncture. But, if you are sure you are ovulating then electroacupuncture may not be necessary. Many people don't believe in it but I am a living, walking testimony that it works! That and Vitex. Btw, I take it during my entire cycle, I do not stop, ever unless I get pregnant.

And let me tell you, when I stopped for an entire month my period came as it should but my luteal phase was only 9 days instead of my normal 14 days

Keep me posted please whichever route you decide.

Nothing beats Vitex for me, 28 day cycle is lovely. But that is my cycle naturally and the Vitex just brings that out. Yours could be different. The Dong Quai nourishes the blood in the body especially the uterus. Those two taken together are amazing!! But, if you do not have scanty periods DO NOT take it while you are bleeding as it may make your period longer. I take it because it strengthens the uterus to make a nice space for babies. :hugs::hugs:

I am sorry this turned out to be ridiculously long! One other thing, you may not need acupuncture at all. I would see what Vitex does for a cycle first. Talk to you soon!
