Hopefully this will provide more information on inductions, I hope none of you have to have one as long as mine!! :flower:

Apologies this is so long!

19th December 2013

I was booked in for an induction of the 19th December, at 12 days overdue as per my hospitals policy. I had no signs of anything happening, no plug loss or BH all I could feel was baby banging away at my cervix but not getting anywhere.

On the 19th the hospital phoned me up early in the morning and asked me to come in early as it was quiet. I was taken to a delivery suite and the process explained before they checked me over. I had a little cry as I was so overwhelmed! Not surprisingly when they checked me I wasn't dilated at all and cervix was high and back. They couldn't even reach babies head which I was told wasn't a good sign and I was given a big fat 0 on the bishops score at this time. I had the first pessary inserted (uncomfortable but not awful) and was monitored for 2 hours. Everything was fine but baby kept moving around and coming off the monitor :dohh:. Was then taken to a small ward on the postnatal department and we dropped off the bags and then walked the length of the hospital for the afternoon to see if we could get things going. Got checked later that day and I had dilated 1cm and a second pessary was inserted. I had to stay overnight on the ward so husband was sent home. Fortunately I was with a really lovely girl on the ward  overnight I started getting contractions and the midwifes recommended regular baths to ease the pains. I was taking regular pain killers but these didn't really help.

20th December 2013

I was told I would be going back to the delivery suite at 8am but they were really busy so I didn't end up going down until mid afternoon. I was monitored and was having regular contractions every 5 mins. I started to lose my plug but sadly the contractions just fizzled out before I made it back to the delivery suite. Given the third and final pessary and tried walking/bouncing again. I was left overnight again to see if it would work this time and was told if it didn't I could either choose a 4th pessary or a c section. This night was awful I was in so much pain from the build of the pessarys and baby had gone back to back, the pain was going right through my bum. Again I used baths and also used my tens machine to ease the pain (it did help!).

21st December 2013

I was taken down to the delivery suite again at 8am and was told no matter what baby was coming today -yeahy! I was in so much pain I couldn't even sit down! I used gas and air to ease the pain and they managed to break my waters and I was 3cm dilated. There was meconium in my waters so I was immediately moved to higher risk and under joint midwife and doctor care :dohh: I had a lovely young doctor who was fab and worked well with the midwives. I was put on the put onto the drip straight away and monitored continuously. I was asked what I thought about pain relief, I had planned originally to go as natural as possible but was now in agony and we hadnt even started! The midwife suggested an epidural which I decided to go for to ease the back to back pains and it didn't matter that I wouldn't be able to move around as I was on continuous monitoring anyway.

Had to wait 1.5 hours for an epidural, there was honestly no pain and about half an hour after it went in it took all the pains away and I could just feel a bit of pressure. I topped up the epidural regularly and could still lift my legs throughout.

The baby kept shifting again throughout the monitoring and the doctor explained this could be a sign of distress so they took a swab from her head to test, whilst this happened my blood pressure dropped and suddenly there were 4 midwives in the room and they were trying to get the check done quickly. The check came back fine. They checked my dilation and I was still only 3cm and they stretched me to 4cm.

A couple of hours later (by this time about 7pm) baby was playing up on the monitors again and they checked me again, I was no further dilated but baby wasn't in distress. The doctor said my cervix was bruised and there was a bruise on the babies head where she had been trying to get out. The doctor said she was not comfortable with carrying on for much longer as I wasn't progressing and they didn't want to keep swabbing the babies head. We agreed to keep going for another 2 hours to see if I dilated any further (deep down at this point I thought I was headed for a csection).

1.5 hours later we were overruled by the consultant on duty who wanted me checked again (I think baby played up on the monitor again), I was no further dilated and at this point I agreed to a c section. I asked how long it would take and was told I was going straight away. They had set it all up behind the scenes. I was taken to theatre and my husband scrubbed up. Surgery was very calm and everyone was lovely, I had to have blood transfusions but yeh whole thing was kept very calm. My epidural was just topped up and I was fine until I was being stitched up when I started shaking slightly.

Baby was born at 9:30pm, and when the doctor lifted her out she exclaimed she is massive! She was 9lbs1 and totally unexpected, I was told she was too big for me too labour and for the last 3 days my body had been fighting the induction and stopping it progressing. We stayed in the recovery room after surgery for a while where I was monitored, fed toast, did skin to skin and bf for the first time with some assistance.

About 10:30pm we were taken to a private room and husband could stay over. We stayed 2 days and my recovery was straightforward bar my iron levels going haywire. I was given lots of bf support and all the midwives were fantastic. The pain the first couple of days was horrible but everyone is right when they say you get better very quickly.

Sadly after we were discharged things went a little downhill and we ended up in hospital as baby was dehydrated at lost 15% of her weight. They wanted to put a tube down her throat, and at this point we decided to stop bf and move into formula as I couldn't do that yo my 4 day old baby. I have been told I was basically to poorly post c section (not from surgery but from blood transfusions and iron levels). I still feel a little raw from stopping bf as she latched well etc, and I didn't like the judgement at the hospital. My MW and HV have been fantastic support and she has regained her weight well and is now 11lbs at 5 weeks :happydance:

This story sounds traumatic but honestly I was calm throughout the labour and have no ill feelings, the care and support I had was fantastic and no one realised how big she was! Baby is amazing and I am totally in love. I am due my 6 week check at the end of the week and can't wait to be getting out and about more on my own. My recovery has been really straight forward and I have had no pains for weeks

Congratulations, tublet! And amazing that you stayed so calm the whole time. Don't feel bad about having to stop bf, I always feel that, however it is good that bf is promoted, the pro-bf liga is going a bit too far by making young moms, who make a sensible decision, feeling bad about themselves.
