Hello!
After being told I could never have my own children I have resigned myself to that fact. So when I started throwing up in the mornings I took a week off with a 'sickbess bug,' thinking nothing of it. After my partner suggested it may be a good idea to get a pregnancy tester I shrugged and let him nip to the shops to buy one.
It came back positive.
After making him buy 3 more tests (all different brands) and them all coming back positive, I was ecstatic! There was a problem though. I was on medication for my stroke and brain tumours and it could harm the baby! I booked an emergency appointment with a lovely Midwife and we started a plan of action. I went to my Neurologist and he permitted me to come off my meds slowly. That wasn't good enough for me. I went completely cold turkey and was very ill for weeks, but at least my baby would be safe.
At 7 weeks I had an emergency scan done as I had horrific pains. All was fine, just a ridiculously bad kidney infection.
The weeks went by and at 16 weeks I was rushed into hospital with a suspected miscarriage. I was distraught as I had been bleeding at work and had crippling tummy pains. I stayed in overnight and was prepared for the worst. The baby was fine though and had just moved too vigorously and dislodged slightly, hence the bleeding.
Scans came and went and I had weekly Obstetrician appointments as I was a high-risker. Then at 34 weeks I felt different. Water had begun to trickle out slowly and I rang the hospital. Could this be my waters? I was told to go in with my bags. That was a Saturday. I was observed and told that my hind waters had broken and there was continual fluid loss. I was put on antibiotics and give steroid injections for her lungs. On Monday it really kicked off. I had to be induced as she had hardly any waters left. I was given a pessary and after that not working, Syntocin. 12 hours into this fake labour I had the rest of my waters broken and was monitored. I went 24 hours with no pain relief as I was already tired and needed to be alert to push. I never felt that need to, though. Just before the 25th hour I had gas and air and morphine. They then decided to do an emergency C-Section. I can only describe the feeling as someone rummaging for their keys in a handbag.
At 18:07 on the 4th December Isla Lily Thornton was delivered. She was a good 5lbs 9 and very alert. They showed me her before whizzing her off to ICU.
We spent 9 long days in hospital and my partner used his paternity to finish moving house so we would be warm and happy coming home.
Here are a few pictures of her. They are all around her being 4-5weeks old.. I know I am incredibly biased but she is so beautiful!
Pictured with her Daddy, Friday in hospital (ongoing problem) and then getting ready to go shopping with me.
