Hello All!!

Brand new to the site. I'm a almost 37 year old woman, my BF is 39. Neither of us have children (yet) -- nor have either one of us been/gotten pregnant.

Although we aren't charting cycles yet, we are committed to figuring out if there's a problem & where it lies....I just wanted to get some feed back on how to begin this process... He thinks he can't conceive & I also have my own reservations about being able to conceive.

I didn't get my period till i was 15.... they have never been what I would call "regular" & can be anywhere from 5 weeks to several months apart. I have never been at this point in a relationship that "children" were positively on the table. We both want a child & are in full agreement. That being said.... I have so many questions, but i'll start with these. Thanks in advance!!!

Is an OB/GYN considered a fertility Dr.? Is there such a thing?

Is there a better health insurance plan to have if we're trying to conceive??

Hello toao :) I'm UK so I'm unable to answer your questions as things are pretty basic in the UK! But I was wondering about your irregular periods, have you ever considered the possibility of pcos? Poly cystic ovary syndrome. Have you ever had problems with weight or odd hair growth any where? :)

I'm ashamed to admit I don't have my annual paps as I should :( I cant even remember the last time I had one. Obviously that's the first thing I need to do.
But no, never had any problems with my weight or odd hair growth. My hair has been thinning the last 3-4 yrs though......

I'd start with a gyno. Get a pap and then ask for some fertility referrals. An OB and a fertility specialist aren't the same. Your Gynecologist will probably be able to give you some referrals. The fertility specialist will be the one who will test both of you to see if there are any issues.

And, fwiw, I had my daughter when I was 46. I had given up and wasn't actively trying to get pregnant, and it just happened. Good luck

Hi Toao,

An OB/GYN is a good place to start.

There are many symptoms relating to PCOS, you don't have to have all of them. Here they are:

Weight gain - about half of woman with PCOS will have weight gain that is difficult to manage;
Fatigue
Unwanted hair growth - could be face, back, chest, thumbs, toes and abdoment,
Thinning hair on the head,
Infertility - could struggle to fall pregnant or suffer early loss,
Acne
Mood changes
Pelvic pain
Headaches
Sleep problems
and of course, some experience irregular mentrual cycles.

You may never develope cysts.

I check a few of the above symtoms myself. It can be treated, and not with difficulty.

Do you know if you ovulate monthly?

Hey! I'm 37 :). Just wanted to mention, hair thinning can be to do with thyroid function, which can cause issues with fertility - I would also request thyroid function tests from your doctor; the good thing is with medication, the issues go away. Good luck

Hair thinning can also be low iron or just low ferritin.
