My daughter (twin two) has diarrhoea, has had it for about 5 days. On Tuesday there was blood in her nappies so our gp sent us to hospital to get checked. They believed as she looked healthy and didn't have a fever that it could just be inflammation of the lining from the diarrhoea but sent off as sample just in case. Ive just changed her and there was black bits in her nappy and it smelt real vinegar-like. I'm getting really worried as she's been really cranky and crying a lot more than usual, it looks like she gets a stomach cramp as she jumps and starts screaming.

Anyone know what the black bits are?

Does she have any oral signs of teething at all - swollen gums, red patches or white under the surface, chewing toys, biting more, dribbling?

Loose nappies are often connected with teething, as are acidic-smelling nappies. The crankiness and jumping followed by crying signal teething to me too. My daughter used to do exactly this when she got a spasm of pain - and her hand would go straight in her mouth.

She also got very dark green, almost blackish nappies a few times while getting a tooth. It would have little bits in it that looked a lot like tiny pieces of wilted spinach - is this the sort of thing you are experiencing?

The blood isn't a sign of teething - if it is fresh, red blood, though, the doctors are likely right and she just has a little irritation somewhere in her lower intestinal tract from experiencing diarrhoea.

Is there any chance she's teething? In the absence of a fever or vomiting (and because your other LO hasn't gotten sick as well), it would lead me to believe it's not an infection. But my daughter had very loose, rancid acidic stools whenever she was teething. That would also make a lot of sense since she's crying a lot and seeming unsettled (though obviously, who wouldn't be if your stomach was bothering you anyway?). So it could very well be that. I would guess that the black bits are dried blood as it can turn black when it's old and look just like that. I'm assuming they haven't started on solids or had anything else change in their diets recently?

Hi how is she now? Has she been sick at all? I hope she is feeling better xx

My boy had similar (very frequent vinegar diarrhoea) and it was rota virus. He didn't have any more vomiting than usual and he had no fever. Harmless in the long run as long as the baby is kept hydrated and is closely monitored for signs of dehydration and it runs is course within a couple of weeks. It was really nasty though. If your baby has this it will show in the lab results.
