My baby is 8 months, and while I know it's completely normal for a baby to not be crawling yet, my concern is that he's really not mobile at all. He'll roll over, but that's about it. He tries to push himself with his legs, but does absolutely nothing with this upper body. He's never once pushed up onto all fours or tried to pull himself up onto anything. Anyone have any tips on how to encourage crawling/pulling up or just using the upper body in general?

Sophie wasn't rolling or crawling at all at 8 months. She got mobile pretty quickly between then and 11 months and was walking at 11 months and 6 days.

There isn't really anything you can do, they get there when they are ready.

DD1 never ever crawled, she rolled for the first year, sometimes did a swimming type thing on the carpet to get anywhere!

My LO has gone from sitting watching the world go by from whereever you put her down to crawling, sitting from lying down and cruising in a week. She is now nearly 11 months old. Before that, she never managed to go anywhere.
She liked her jumparoo and seemed to get the idea about being upright from that and how to use her legs etc. and when frustration set in, nursery plonked her in a baby walker, freedom! She loves it.
She started to crawl a couple of weeks after a little boy she spends time at nursery with did. Its like she realised that if he could do it, so should she. All of a sudden, zoom! Perfect crawling technique. Must have been all that observation.
I was advised to put tous just out of reach. Give lots of encouragement etc. my oh and i did a lot of demo crawling too, not sure it that worked. Good luck.

My son is 7 months old and sits and rolls perfectly fine. He'll stand if he's put up against the sofa and shows an interest in crawling, but only with a tonne of attention and encouragement. I walked before I crawled. My parents are constantly telling me that I must be a lazy parent because I was up and walking around by my son's age.

Does your LO sit up? Mine was only sitting and rolling over at 8 mths. He 9 1/2 months and has just this week started to scoot across the floor. Before that he would just cry and kick when I would put him on his belly.

Pixie wasn't mobile in any way, shape or form until the last 10-14 days. She's almost 12 months.

My son didn't do much at 8 months either. But by 9 months he was a crawling champion and now at 11 months he's walking.

My daughter didn't move until 10 months! She rolled at 7, crawled at 10 pulled to stand straight after and walked at 14 months. Once she started there was no stopping her but it took a while to get there :haha:

Dd didn't do much at 8 months. She was only starting to sit with good balance.

you can do something. Put your child on its stomac as much as you possibly can. That is the postition they need to be in to learn everything and to build up their strenght. With my first child I held her a lot and had her on the back endlessly. Needless to say she was not developing as fast motorically as many of her friends. With my second child I read books about child neurodevelopment and having had her spend hours on the floor each day has given her so much I believe.

All the best

Pixie spent countless hours on her stomach on the floor with me. She still didn't start moving anywhere until a couple of weeks ago.

Babies will do what they do when they do it, no matter how much interference you give.

The patterns of how and when babies become mobile is so wildly different that at this age, it really is too early to worry. As far as encouragement goes, I'd just wait patently. Is he sitting independently? That at least would be an indication that his muscle tone is on track.

Babies that are motivated to move, don't stay on their backs. And when holding them, you're not likely to be cradling them the whole time, especially after the newborn stage. Therefore, they still develop strength even when held. It's only an issue if you restrict the baby's movement such as in a bouncy seat or car seat.

With both of mine, I held them as much as they wanted to be held. When they became interested in spending time on the floor, I placed them on their backs. Violet started liking time on the floor at almost 2 months. She become mobile at 6 months and crawled "properly" at 7.5 months. She learned to sit at the same age. Leo liked the floor from the beginning and now chooses to spend a good bit of time on his belly. He is also trying to crawl and I suspect he will crawl early.

This isn't to brag, but just to say that babies know what they need to get moving and will do so if they are given the opportunity to do so and "tummy time isn't all it's cracked up to be... I'd say it's a bunch of bunk.

My DS barley did any moving or rolling until about ten months. All of a sudden he woke up one day, started crawling and pulling up to stand. Literally overnight
