My baby is now 8 weeks old and his diaper leaks through his clothes almost every time!!

It started about a month ago. I assumed he was getting too big for newborn diapers so I tried size 1 but he was swimming in them and still leaking, so I switched back for a few more weeks and figured the leaking was just because he was between sizes.

But now he's in size 1 and the middle of the weight range (12lbs) and still leaking multiple times every day!

I do point his penis down, it usually leaks around his legs. Am I supposed to do something with the elastics around his legs (tuck them in or out)? Or maybe I need to pull his diaper up higher?? But he has such a big tummy and tiny waist it seems like it would slide down. How close should the tabs be?? I must be doing something wrong, surely everyone doesn't have this problem. He goes through SO many outfits I'm doing laundry all the time, plus he hates getting undressed and it happens so often :( poor little guy.

I'm using huggies little snugglers if that helps.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!

The nappy needs to be quite close-fitting around the legs - otherwise, when it gets heavy with pee, it hangs down and creates a space.

I always put it on by placing her bottom in the first fold crease down from the back of the nappy. Then I pull the front right up so it is basically against her genitals. If the front and back of the nappy seem very mismatched this way, you sometimes have to do a bit of wiggling.

Then, I find it is important to take the front tabs (the non-sticky ones) one at a time, and pull them quite tight, right down across the top of the leg and round the hip - hold it there and pull the sticky tab over to the middle and attach. Repeat, and then adjust the tabs so they aren't too tight/loose.

Then put a finger inside and run it round each leg to pull the elastic out a little, and also to make sure the frilly bits aren't tucked in.

If the nappy comes right up your baby's back or front, this is ok. The front usually settles itself under the navel with a bit of movement. I've found that putting on a nappy too low is what causes the problem - my OH still does it now sometimes, though he is getting better. :haha:

It sounds like you're doing everything correct

Have you tried using a different brand of diaper? I've never had much luck with Huggies and switched to Pampers and Asda's own brand. Haven't had a problem since xx

I'd say try a different brand. We had no luck with Huggies nappies, nor did anyone else, they even went so far to discontinue them in the UK because demand dropped so much.

I had issues with Huggies leaking frequently . I switched to pampers and haven't had a problem since.

Definitely try a different brand. I've used brands that leaked every single time and others that almost never did (and it isn't necessarily the more expensive ones that work better). We use a store brand one (Asda, which I don't think you have there, but it's basically the same as Walmart) and I've had hardly any leaks in 3 years. Also, how often are you changing them? It sounds obvious, but at that age, I was changing my daughter's still pretty much every feed, but not necessarily during the night anymore unless she did a poo, but definitely nearly every feed during the day.

My little boy is 7 weeks and just over 12lb he's in size 3 nappies, I'd either try the next size up or change the brand, I know huggies stopped selling nappies in the uk as they weren't selling!

Huggies leaked with my daughter too. The pampers swaddlers worked best for us as a newborn. I'd try another brand.

This I'm definitely going to try... I hadn't even thought of adjusting the front tabs!

Thanks for all of the suggestions :) Im also going to try different brands.

Also, how often are you changing them?

Good question. I change him at least once every time he is awake/feeds, but sometimes (often) he poops right after I change him and it still comes out the sides.

Oh wow maybe I'm completely in the wrong size!! But the size 1 look so big on him I can't imagine what size 3 would be like. He's 8 weeks and 12 lbs but I think most of his weight is in his head :)

I had massive leaking issues with Huggies with DD. Switched to Pampers and haven't had any issues since! It sounds like you are doing everything right honestly. Just make sure it's snug but not too tight.

It sounds like you aren't pulling it up/making it tight enough around the waist so the leg holes are too loose. I used to do the same thing when my first son was a baby and he leaked all the time. Once I figured it out our leaking issues stopped and I haven't had the same issue with my DS2 due to putting the nappy on better. Pull it up higher at the waist so that the leg bands are snug at the bottom and then pull the tabs nice and snug around the waist. Don't worry about making it too tight, if you can fit two fingers under it it's not too tight. Too loose and it will always fail. And, yes, pull out the frilly bits after you've got it on.

Huggies are crud! I would try a bigger size though; my DD is 12.5lbs and has been in size 3 for a few weeks (Pampers but I imagine the size range is pretty similar). I've always found that we needed to move up a while before they reached the upper weight limit.

I agree with everyone that mentioned it, switch from huggies! They're completely awful, and no matter what I did leaked for the very brief time I used them. Also if size one feels too big then they probably are, not all diapers fit babies the same.

I had a problem with Huggies leaking when I used them! Try a different brand because you are doing everything else right by the sound of it:flower:

I think size 3 in Canada is diff than in the UK from what I have read xx
My 13 month old 24 pound girl is in size 4 now And was in three until about 9-10 months

I'm in Canada also op

I hated huggies on dd2 they leaked all the time it was a nightmare and my mil brought to boxes of them so I felt like I had to use them because I didn't want to seem like I was ungrateful and wasting her money, but as soon as she was too big for them I switched to a different brand I love love love aldi nappies they are cheap but good quality and I have no leakage with ds x

Sizing must be different in other countries. My daughter is 9 weeks, 10.5 lbs and wears size 1. She will easily fit into these for a while as they are slightly big on her. We are in Canada.

When she was newborn I had Huggies and Pampers and I much preferred the fit of the Huggies (didn't have leaking issues with either brand). You just have to find the diaper that works for your baby's body type, sounds like Huggies are not it!
