I have a 9 day old girl who I have been exclusively breastfeeding. Since my milk came in I have constantly had lumps during feeding after being engorged. I feel like I have had over supply most of the time. She got congested yesterday and fed and latched poorly all night and today and I now have lumps on both sides I feel unable to clear. I have tried the normal hot baths, massaging whilst feeding etc. just wondering if you think this will settle of it's own accord or is likely to develop into mastitis? I fed my last girl for 19 months but in the first 5 months had mastitis 6 times. I feel like I'm really anxious about that repeating itself so I'm hyper sensitive to the engorgement that might be fairly normal early on. I can't remember this stage last time!!

I had mastitis. The MD told me to keep the breast empty. Maybe try pumping between feeds today to keep breast empty?

Make sure you drain each breast before you swap to the other so lo is getting as much out as possible. I would be careful about pumping at this stage as you may end up with an oversupply. It doesnt sound like mastitis. More likely your supply settling. Mastitis usually makes the breast very hard and hot to touch, you can also get similar sypstoms to flu/fever etc. I would try hand expressing in the shower to relieve a bit. This will avoid the oversupply issue caused my pumping and relieve the swelling.

I had this in the early days. I used to hand express just enough to take the painful/uncomfortable feeling away. If you pump you will just keep supplying more (which is fine if you are after a stock)

I also had mastitis it felt different as I had a pain just in one breast that was very sensitive to touch very quickly I got a hot red mark there and flu symptoms.

I hope this doesn't develop into mastitis for you

If your baby is having a hard time nursing because of stuffiness take a sterilized dropper full of breastmilk and put it up each nostril. I lay baby on my legs, head at my knees so their head is tilted back. It will clear their nose and help them nurse better.
