Mesa will be 10 months here shortly. Pulling up, walking a couple feet behind her push walker, crawls like a pullet, claps hands, shakes head, etc.

But shes just not very vocal. Like, ever. I talk to her constantly, I name everything we are doing....but when she does make noise, its just long drawn out vowel sounds. Just in the last week did she start adding "ba" in there, but its not what I would count as "babbling."

I know not to compare...but Im worried.

I had a lot of concerns about my son's language development. He hardly babbled at all, and then it was almost only ever "ba" until he was almost 18 months. I had a lot of talks with his pediatrician and we checked his hearing and other things. He was very ahead physically... Walked at 9 months, etc. He started to babble and use a few words around 20 months then at 22 months he started speaking in 4 word sentences. Just boom! Apparently my dad was the same. Didn't talk until he talked in sentences. He's 25 months now and uses 6+ word sentences (my son, not my dad =P).

I would definitely talk to your pediatrician but mine said as long as hearing is OK and other social skills are fine, she wasn't going to worry until he didn't have at least 25 words at 2. She admitted to being shocked at his language development between his 18 month appointment and 24 month appointment.

Does your LO use sign? We did a lot of signing, singing, reading books (Richard Scarry books are the best for vocabulary!), and hanging around kids with better language skills.

Good luck!

My eldest daughter wasnt a babbler at all!! I only ever heard her say mama once (seriously). Even dada, baba etc i heard maybe 2 or 3 times. She was a very quiet baby. She just went from nothing to proper words. She had her first word just before she turned 1 (duck) and gradually added more until she had a language explosion around 15/16 months. She spoke in sentences at just over 1 and a half. Some babies just arent that vocal, she was always focused more on the physical things. She walked at 9 months, running by her birthday. Once the physical stuff was sorted she moved on to speech xx

Thank you ladies, this brings me peace. Autism runs in my family, and I am always in panic mode. Shes meeting and exceeding all other milestones and is very physical; hoping shes just quiet.

I'm sure she's just focusing on physical things. The fact she claps etc is great. Dd1 was scored as having speech between 48-60 months at her 2.5 year check when she was 28 months old so not babbling certainly didnt hold her back speech wise xx

My daughter never really babbled, we did get da da da but not much past that. She was behind at her 2 year check up and sent for speech therapy. She had an initial assesment where she was "slightly behind" and a formal assessment 6ish months later where she was "ahead" for her age (at 3 years 1 month). it was almost like she waited until she old say words properly..
