hi
I am 9 weeks pregant. Could any one give me details of any private insurance for maternity.
Do we have any private insurance offered for pregnany women which covers delivery (normal or c -section) in UK.
I am exploring on Bupa but not getting correct URL link for the maternity insurance policy.
Other than Bupa is there any other companies provide private insurance for maternity in UK?

Thanks
Boyal

Most private policies do not cover pregnancy and childbirth and expect you to use the NHS.

If you do not already have insurance that covers pregnancy then you can't just take out a policy when you are already pregnant as that would be a pre-existing condition.

If you have a spare fifteen grand you could probably afford private care and delivery!

Other than that, although resources are stretched, most people are reasonably happy with the care they have on the NHS. You do hear some stories on the news but these are not the norm.

Page 38 of the bupa policy -even if you have full coverage with no financial limits they do not pay for normal pregnancy and childbirth. I don't think you will find any insurer who will either, especially if you are already pregnant.

If you haven't got a spare 15 grand but you can afford some private treatment, you may want to look into an independent midwife and/or doula and some extra private scans.

Here is a private company who deal in pregnancy, in solihull west mids. They do private scans and also full delivery/C sections etc and I think the charge is £1500 (there's a price list). But like the girls said I don't think you can get insurance.

A lady on here recommended me MUMS, she had a private scan there and said it was really nice.

Thanks for the details. I have heard few stories about NHS treatment during delivery period.
Few of my friends faced issues as they waited for long time atleast 3-4 days in labour and baby turned out with jandis. or they went thru c-section at the last minute.
In NHS is there anyway we can choose for c-section as a prior arrangement?

BUPA International cover pregnancy/childbirth but you had to have joined them before you got pregnant.

I think it's pretty rare to get an elective c-section for a first-time pregnancy on the NHS. Sorry :(

MUMS uses the NHS, the fee you pay is for top up care. The actual delivery is still NHS though. A private delivery, such as somewhere like the Portland, would add up to thousands of pounds, especially for a c-section.

If there is a good reason for having a c-section then your consultant will consider it on the NHS. However it is a major surgery and is riskier for you and the baby than a normal delivery so there would have to be a valid reason. Not just not wanting to go through labour.

Labour takes as long as it takes - hours or days. Going private won't change that. Also length of labour has nothing to do with jaundice.

I can't fault the care if received labour and I think most women would agree with me.

Yes, the best way to feel reassured would be to research the different NHS choices (which you can do online), go and visit them and choose the best one that way. We travelled nearly an hour to our hospital last time but that's because it was worth the trip. It was an NHS hospital and funnily enough did take 4 days but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. The care was outstanding x
