My little boy was born on 12.11.13 at 3.28pm in the pool (at the hospital). He weighed a perfect 3.42kg (about 7lb 9oz) and is currently thriving. He was 3 days early and caught me by surprise (I so thought he was going to be late like his big brother).
I must admit I had a pretty amazing birth and consider myself very lucky indeed! It was all very 'convenient'; I woke up at 7am with period like pains but I'd had them in the morning for two days before but nothing major. I got up, washed and dressed before hubby went to work and as my son (who is 2 years old) and I were waving goodbye at the window I had a rather large pain which made me drop to my knees! I heard hubby's car door close...and the front door open; he said he would work from home this morning! So I just carried on as normal and took my son to the childminders (with hubby of course - it's only a few minutes walk but there was no way I wanted to be left on my own!). Walking really helped me and I was doing my 'in for 4, out for 8' breathing to keep me focused and calm. Once home I started bouncing and rotating on my ball and noticed the 'pains' were getting closer together and lasting longer so I whipped out the iPad and opened up the contraction timer app! Once I noticed a pattern and they were getting more intense (still very manageable) I called the hospital. I told them I thought I was in labour and said how often my 'contractions' were and they said to pop on down so they could have a look. Cue frantic rushing about getting last minute things sorted (like someone to pick up our son from the childminder and sorting him out some lunch!). I called my parents and they were on their way so that was one less thing to worry about. By 12pm we were heading to hospital and I remember doing my 'escalator' breathing (breathing especially for contractions) in the car on the way down which really helped. I went up to triage and was examined at 12.30pm and was only 2cm (I had a feeling I would be - the same happened last time). As this was my second baby I was told not to leave hospital grounds so we did a couple of laps around the hospital and got some lunch. Waiting for them to make up our baguette in the main reception area my contractions started getting REALLY strong (the type that you need to make a noise with!) and am sure everyone was watching me but I didn't care!!! By 2.30pm we had gone back to triage and I was 5cm so was given gas and air. I found I couldn't do the escalator breathing at this point and had to take deep breaths with the gas and air to get the full effect of the entonox (I had a mask rather than a tube). The hospital is currently refurbing its delivery suite so there were no rooms available which worried me slightly! I was in the triage treatment room (fully equipped for delivery though *phew*) but the student midwife asked if I was interested in the pool...er, yeah! It was free so off I trotted (walking through the contractions really helped!) and I jumped into the pool. I wasn't in the pool for very long before I felt the pressure building (but no desire to push) and then when I couldn't hold back any more I pushed and then I just let my body do its thing - I felt my baby's head descending and next thing I knew I was bringing him up between my legs! Less than an hour before I was only 5cm! Once the cord has stopped pulsing my hubby cut the cord and I jumped out to deliver the placenta on the bed at the side. We were then moved to a normal delivery room (2nd degree tear that needed stitches) but all I wanted was a shower/bath so once that was done the midwife finished off my paperwork whilst I was in the bathroom with hubby and my new boy and by 7pm I was discharged! A couple of the midwives were surprised how mobile I was considering I'd just had a baby and said I should look more tired than they did and not the other way round!!! It truly was an amazing experience - the breathing I learnt in my birthing classes really helped me stay focused and I just let my body do what it wanted/needed to do. Makes me think I could do it all over again but I'm sticking with my two boys for now! xxx
