Abi is on nutramigen for lactose/dairy intollerance and we were told when we wean her to keep a food diary to check for reactions then slowly add dairy into her diet in this order: cheese, fromage frais, yoghurt then milk products if she seems fine on all of these then we can try her on aptamil and see how it goes. We weren't going to wean her until she was at least 6 months but in the last few weeks she has really gone off her milk, taking about half what she was and is having really bad nights so we were advised by HV and doc to start on Saturday and she seems to be taking well to it. We've made all our own purees using the annabel karmel book, so we know exactly whats in them, but also used a few Ella's Kitchen sachets as they are very natural.

thanks for the reply, i suppose the hv will give me advice on weaning when its time but im very curious, hope it all goes well with the weaning, i have looked at some packet foods and jars that are dairy free but i guess its better to make it yourself as you no what goes in it x x

At our 3 month check the HV talked about weaning as it was the last time I would have seen her before 6 months. My HV team also does a weaning talk once a month within one of the clinics which I am gonna go to.
It's a lot cheaper to make your own too one sachet is over £1 and I froze what I didn't use which made about 9 cubes where as I bought a whole bag of organic carrots for £1 and sweet potatoes for about 69p and made about 70 cubes, which I can mix and match with the other bits in my freezer.

Hi ya

My lo has been on sma lf since he was 6 weeks old. We were advised to wean at 4 months. U'd be surprised at which foods you can get for lf weaning. The plum and ellas kitchen ranges do lots of products free from nasties.
I started weaning my lo on c&g strawberry and banana porridge. Then moved on to our own fruit and veg purees. :) xxx
I'd still wait until your lo shows signs of being ready before starting.

I have been told about the 'peter rabbit' range at Waitrose, especially the chocolate.
I dread how much it costs though!!!

thanks for the reply, im not going to wean him yet he is not ready yet, only 10 weeks tomorrow just thinking ahead, i dont no any one with a lactoce intollerant baby so its all new to me, i never has any problems with my other 2 children, they was on sma gold until the age of 1 the follow on milk, just thinking will he be able to have follow on milk or will he still have it at that age x x

Hiya, has your dr referred you to a dietician? That might be the best thing to do as they are the best people to advise and help with lactose free weaning. Our LO was diagnosed Lactose intolerant at 8 weeks and has been on Enfamil O-lac ever since. She is 11 1/2 months old now and is still on a completely lactose & dairy free diet.

Not to bad mouth Health visitors as I know they are not all the same but they dont really know much about how to manage weaning with a lactose intolerant baby. We have had some crazy ideas given to us by ours and when I mentioned some of the suggestions to the dietician she almost hit the roof. It all depends on the severity of the intolerance as well, some babies like ours is very sensitive to lactose and something with the tiniest bit in it makes her really ill.

I was given a link by our dietician for a website and it was really useful for weaning. https://www.nnuh.nhs.uk/Leaflet.asp?ID=765 it will give you a pdf to open and it has a table on the 2nd page of foods that are safe or not and also a list of foods to watch out for on labels. Weaning doesnt have to be expensive if you do want to use jars then cow & gate do a very good selection of jars and out of all the different manufacturers they have the clearest labelling as well. They state quite clearly on the side if they are milk/lactose free, also a good website to look at is Hipp. They list all their jars and products and they show which ones are lactose free, egg free etc https://www.hipp.co.uk/media/pdf/Intolerances.pdf

Hope this helps and your little boy continues to improve on his new milk. Good luck with weaning if you want to chat to someone in the same boat or for advice PM me. I was the same as you at first unsure about what lactose intolerance is and i also felt very daunted at the thought of weaning.

^ the above is good advice. If possible ask for a referral to a peadiatric dietician, our appointment was really helpful. They gave us a list of all the names milk or milk products can be labelled as. I was told that most babies outgrow it by the age of one and that once he hit that age then dairy would be introduced in a controlled environment, either at home or at the hospital and see how he goes xx
