My LO is now 9 days old and is bottled fed with Aptamil but after reading several forums im now unsure if we are making the bottles correctly seeing as there are new guidelines in place.(every forum/website people seem to have different opinions)

We steralise the bottles and boil the kettle leaving the water to cool down for 30 minutes, fill the bottles with the cooled boiled water and fit the lids. When my LO needs a feed we add the formula and shake the bottle well.

Is this ok? as i have now read that all bottles should be made when needed but my LO isnt in a routine of feeding yet and will be crying for 30-40 minutes while we are making 1 bottle which seems very unpractical.

any advice would be great.

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nick

I agree it's not practical to make it up as the packet says, so what I do is put 3 oz of cooled boiled water into the sterilised bottles in the morning, put the caps on and leave them on the side. When Holly needs a bottle, I top up the water with 1 oz of freshly boiled water and then add the formula and shake. Makes it the perfect temp for Holly :flower:

i was told the formula needs to be added to boiling water as formula isnt sterile. So we make 8oz bottles and what we do is add 8 oz of formula to 5oz of water and then leave to cool and put in fridge. Then when she needs it we add 3oz water and its perfect temp.

Hi Nick, sorry, can't offer any advice on this, but was wondering the same.

My LO is just 5 days and I am not bfing because he just wouldnt latch on, but I'm finding it impossible to get any decent advice etc from my midwives who seem pretty unwilling to help since I'm not BFing.

I just can't believe that everyone makes up their bottles the way that the packets describe! I wanted to try doing what you were doing, but as a first time mum, I'm pretty neurotic and have been 'Googling' this to death, but as you said have found conflicting advice everywhere.

I started making them when needed and it was ridiculous. So now I make them in batches of 2 or 3, then cool them in cold water then put them in the fridge. They are used within 9 hours which is well inside of the recommended 24 hours.

I steril all bottles, boil the kettle, wait 30 mins then add formula to all bottles. When bottles are at room temperature put them in the fridge and use when needed by putting the cold bottle into a bowl of boiled kettle water to heat it up. Use bottles within 24 hours. There is no right or wrong way of doing it. Everyone has different ways. As long as bottles are clean and haven't been made up over 24 hours ago then your fine :)

I sterlise all the bottles in the evening for the next day, leave them for an hour then boil the kettle and fill them then I leave them for a bit before putting them in the fridge and when I need them I warm water in bottle warmer shake add the powder then feed :) I used to make them up when she needed them for a couple of weeks and it was a nightmare, now I do it this way it's less stressful.

I make up the feeds 12 hour in advance, so make 3 or 4 bottles in the evening and the same in the morning. I sterilise bottles, boil kettle, let that cool for 30 min, pour the right amount into each bottle, add formula, shake, put into a pot of cold water, let it cool, and then put in the back of the fridge, they are always used within 24 hour period. so far it has been fine?!

when people shake the bottles, do you put the teat on and shake or the cap thing? my box says put a lid on, but my bottles only came with the teat, the white ring to attach the teat to the bottle and then a plastic over lid thing that I dont think I could shake the formula with?

thanks

Every night I sterilize all of Liam's bottles then I make all of the next days bottles with room tempature nursery water. Then put them in the fridge and I use all within 24 hours.

I make lo bottles up first thing in the morning to last all day, once the water is 24 hours old I throw it away in the morning before making new batch........ My lo is 19 weeks now & she's never had any problems x
