I've reposted this because I think I originally posted in wrong section....

Hi All

I've been to see my GP today to talk about what they can do to help me and hubby, we have been trying to conceive all in all just short of 2 years now and have recently started using the CBFM (though I haven't taken any contraception for 12 years since my son was born).

The GP has told me to work through the 'shopping list' she has given me - a smear booked for the week after next, sperm test for hubby and a blood test to be done between days 1 and 5 of next cycle. She has also told me that I need to make sure my BMI is below 30 (it is currently 32), so I am off to slimming world tomorrow. When we have done all of the above, she will refer us. What I wanted to know, is what happens next after that? Has it been a long wait for people before they get referred? (I live in Tameside in Manchester). Is it a long process before we get to the IVF stage?

Thanks for your help, I'm totally new to all this and have just sort of hoped for the best so far.

Welcome mrsclegg, in answer to your question this is how things have progressed for me. The next step after the bloods and SA was a refer to a Gynae Specialist (April 09). The Specialist then sent me for a HSG which is an internal ultrasound to check your uterus, ovaries and tubes. I also had a dye flushed through to check tube patency. The Specialist then sat down and looked at all the results to see what was happening and discussed which way he recommends us to go. For me I fell into the unexplained category...so he recommended a laparoscpy (May 09). He found a significant amount of endo which I didn't know I had which he cut out. After that...we then had 3 cycles of Clomid with the last cycle we had a trigger shot as well. Today AF got me so now I will be onto IVF. The next stage for some people is IUI, but our specialist wants to make the most of my age as I have just turned 36. I am pretty upset as I never thought this would happen to me as I was able to get pregnant about 4 years ago which m/c. Good luck on your journey. I hope your bloods and SA give you some answers.

Hi there!
You will need a day 21 blood test to check for ovulation as well as the bloods you are having. I live in Manchester and I know that GPs can refer for ultra sounds and HSG (dye tube tests) prior to referral.
Your GP will probably refer you to a gynaecology/fertility clinic once you have all the results back. The first appointmetn can take 3-4 months to come through depending on the waiting list; further treatment depends on what they find.

Just a word of warning though, you may not qualify for NHS IVF as you have a child already, depends on the PCT but I know in Manchester they don't give you funding if you already have children. Might be worth a chat with your GP about this before you go to the clinic.

hopefully you wont need IVF

good luck
Rachael
