Hi all,

DH and I are having a rough time on deciding on a name for our second little boy. I like unique or less common names and DH likes names that are not totally out there.

I really liked the name Marlow but DH thinks this name is for girls. Does anyone have any suggestions as to alternatives? OUr first is named Arthur.

Thanks!

I think Marlow is definitely a boys name but how about Marley? Or Nolan? Sorry I can't really think of any other unusual
Names x

Marlow/Marlowe/Marlo I've only seen used for girls, personally - so I would agree with your DH that it's a girl's name. Plus for me it reminds me too much of the wine Merlot so I always think of this name as being similar to names like Mercedes or Chardonnay. I don't think it "goes" with a classic, "old fashioned" name like Arthur at all.

Names that have the same "feel" to me would be:

Arthur & Henry
Arthur & Frank/ie
Arthur & Oliver
Arthur & Felix
Arthur & Jasper
Arthur & Spencer
Arthur & Simon
Arthur & Arlo (Similar to Marlow!)
Arthur & Benjamin
Arthur & George
Arthur & Sam/Samuel
Arthur & William

I think Arthur does well with;

Seth
Ted
Jude
Archie
Harry
Samson
Stanley

If you're thinking none of the above are like Marlowe
What about-

Milo
Theo

I must say that I think of Marlowe as quite a feminine name. I also agree with some of the name suggestions above. Arthur is such a classic old name (it is our middle name if we have another son). I think names such as Henry, Stanley, Theodore, Monty and Albert all go really well :)

Well ladies you all have excellent taste! :) EAch of you named at least one name that was on my list at one point but got rejected by DH. He's not making it easy!

Yes I love Jasper and Arlo and Samuel! All three rejected by DH! So frustrating.

I love Theo and Harry! Sadly those ones are also rejected by DH.

Yes I did put Theodore on my list of favorites but DH is not a fan. He is Dutch and the Th sound is harder to make for him and his family.

Thanks for the help and feel free to keep the names coming!

After reading your first post I immediately thought Arlo. Arthur and Arlo sounds very cool.

Ive never heard Marlow but I know a girl who callrd her little boy Arlow x

I think Christopher Marlowe, so it's a boy's name to me. It was on my list but got vetoed.

I would go with something more classic as well. I like:

Charles
Chester
Cyril
Edward
Ezra
Felix
Franklin
Frederick
Harvey
Henry
Jack
Joseph
Jude
Lachlan
Lincoln
Malcolm
Oliver
Oscar
Philip
Rupert
Sebastian
Silas
Simon
Tobias
Wilbur
William

What names specifically does your DH like since he's vetoing all of yours?

Thanks! Lachlan was actually one of my names on my list when my first was born but DH did not like it. We also had Sebastian as a runner up for our first but decided he looked more like an Arthur. For some reason neither of us is crazy about Sebastian this time.

DH's list consisted of Eric, Patrick, Maurice and Gabriel. As a former teacher to be honest these names all bring to mind particular students and I guess I was hoping for something less common so to be fair I vetoed his selections just as he vetoed mine. ;)
