Be kind but honest... What do you think of the name Alton?

The obvious association (in the US, at least) is Alton Brown, and we're ok with that.

The captain of the chess club could be named Alton, right? If family history is any indication, we will have a geeky child.

Is it a good name for a hopefully smart kid, or would he be made fun of?

For me the obvious assosiation is Alton Towers- it is one of the biggest theme parks in the UK. I've never heard it used as a name before but if I didn't live in the UK (where honestly he would probably get "Towers!" shouted after he said his first name at least once a day) and have that assosiation I wouldn't think anything of using it, especially as it sounds like it is a recognised name in the US

I don't think it's really a "recognized name" in the US - I've never heard it before!

Who is Alton Brown?

My 7 year old LOVES chess - geeky kids rock!!

As for the name - it's not my style - but I don't think it will be teased per se.

Not sure i'm saying it correctly:

Is it AL-ton or more like Dalton minus the D (all-ton)?

I thought of the theme park Alton Towers too!
I do quite like the name though :)

It isn't my taste but it is fine, I don't have any associations. It does sound more like a last name or a company name but not in a bad way.

There's an Alton on the Christy movies, they're probably not that popular but that was the first thing I thought of. I'd say it's kind of a neutral name for me, neither good nor bad. But just my opinion, yours is what matters hun.

Thanks, all! The luke-warm reaction to the name is helpful feedback. :)

RubyRainbows: Like Dalton without the "d." And Alton Brown is a host on Food Network... I adore him.

There's a place called Alton really close to where I live. Bit of a dumphole, nothing there.
