An important advance has been made toward preventing premature birth, according to a study funded by the childrens charity, Action Medical Research, and published in the Biology of Reproduction. By studying smooth muscle tissue, taken with consent from women who underwent caesarean sections, the researchers found that specific enzymes called transglutaminases seem to have a key role in the signalling pathways that control the contraction of the smooth muscle in the wall of the women during labour. Compounds within this tissue can significantly reduce contractions in laboratory tissue samples taken from pregnant women. It is hoped that these compounds will be a potential drug target and that effective drug therapy can be developed within 5-10 years.
