Grace has now decided she wants to feed ALL the time she's awake, my nipples are killing me! Anyway, when she feeds she usually goes for about 15 minutes, the milk that she finishes with is a white colour which I'm guessing is good? I'm just worried she isn't getting the hindmilk because she is always so hungry! For example, I fed her for 15 minutes and an hour later she wanted feeding again which she did for almost half an hour until she got sleepy and came off herself. I only use one boob per feed

babies sometimes cluster feed but I was also feeding like you and i was told im overfeeding. that i should feed no more than every 2 hours and 20 min per boob each feed. im not sure if everyone goes by this but i thought it was a bit much to be feeding every half an hour to an hour and now i see that he wasnt really hungry anyway he just wanted to suck.

Hindmilk starts coming within a few minutes of LO feeding. If she's cluster feeding, I would just continue to use the same breast until its completely drained, then move to the next one. My rule of thumb, if it's been more than an hour since the previous feed, I move to the other breast, if its within an hour or so, I use the same one for the next feed.

The white milk has the fat in it and is the hindmilk :)

It's totally normal hun. All that sucking brings in your milk and gets the supply up to the level the baby needs. I have only ever used one boob per feed and it's a good way to do it, especially if you get sore nipples as it gives one side a bit of time to heal before being used again.

This is also perfectly fine to do! Just whatever you prefer.

I forgot to mention the sore nipples. If you can get your hands on Lansinoh or another brand of lanolin cream, put that on your nipples after every feed.

Make sure you air dry your nipple prior to puting it on though.

You can also just rub a little milk in and around the areola (and let it air dry) if you need a quick fix.

If you put the Lansinoh on prior to a shower too, the jets of water hitting your chest won't hurt NEARLY as bad.

Just some hints.

Thanks! I use nipple cream, one of my nipples is so raw it's actually scabbed over on one part! It only really hurts as she latches on.

And I do the same as you Marley, just to give my other nipple time to heal a bit. I'm not sure whether she is just feeding for the sake of feeding as before she had a huge feed and was hungry again shortly after and cried until I gave in. She was on for about 10 minutes then stopped and shut her eyes and then brought up some milk.

Since she is only 5 days old, I'm guessing she is feeding so much to get that supply up and stabilized. I second Margerle's suggestion of Lanisoh!

I feed both breasts every time. I let him go on one side until he seems not interested anymore, then try burping him and then we move to the other side. He usually goes 10-15 minutes per side. There are times when he will only go 5-10 minutes because he is so sleepy still. I was told at the hospital by the lactation nurses that I should offer both breasts at every feeding (even if he doesn't want both).
