Hello all!
I breastfed for 3 months then went to Enfamil Infant- LO was fine on it! Then about 3 weeks ago she got a bit of that nasty bug going around. Had some throwing up and watery stool...pediatrician and myself chalked it up to the bug..well it continued for 7 days..was told to move to Similac Isomil DF to stop the diarrhea-it did alright! Yesterday her bowel movements were like an adult and she was so uncomfortable!! Went off of that back to her regular formula, and now the watery bowels are back and she grunts and groans so much after her bottle. Her face also gets blotchy after a bottle then goes back to normal after a few minutes once the bottle is done. I talked to my pediatrician and she agrees to try Soy..so my question is- does this sound like a milk allergy, or protein allergy as the nurse put it. Any clue as to why all of a sudden she would develop an allergy? Any recommendations at all regarding brands of Soy formula..could it be her rice? She only eats rice once a week...??

Thanks!

Hi i would be very wary of soy and also soy can cause the same reaction as dairy as the proteins are similar. Also soy is high in phytoestogens which are a plant based hormone that mimics oestrogen. It can cause fertility problems and thyroid problems later in life and early puberty.

I would be trying out hypoallergenic formula's first which i think you have quite a few of over there. Allimentum, pepti jnr, neocate, elecare etc. I would definitely ask your peditrician if you can try one of these before you go near soy. I do think it sounds like a dairy intolerance/allergy. My LO is very intolerant to dairy and is on Elecare. The prescription formula's do taste vile but you can flavour them until your baby gets used to the taste and gradually wean them off the flavouring

Could it.be something like a temporary lactose intolerance? I think some bugs can strip the gut of the enzymes needed to break down things like lactose and are left with a temporary intolerance for a couple of weeks whilst the gut heals and the enzymes regrow.

EDIT - just to add that soy is the 2nd biggest allergen in babies behind cows milk and my LO is intolerant to both. I would 2nd trying a hypoallergenic formula, my LO is on Nutramigen. I think you can get a lactose free formula off the shelf which you could try, it won't help if the problem is with the milk protein but maybe an option if you have problems getting a hypoallergenic formula prescribed.

I use soy as my baby has horrible stomach cramps with regular formula. I don't think that it will cause fertility problems later in life. Not really sure it would be allowed to sell it with all of the side effects that are listed. To me it sounds like a milk allergy. My first did that whole liquid stool and lots of spitting up. Changed to soy and no more problems. all of my children did fine on breast milk but did not tolerate formula. I have used both the enfamil and similac brands of soy and they are both fine.

On the other hand it is probably accurate that soy formula's have the second largest allergen in infants. But aren't they fed at the second highest rate? wouldn't it stand to reason that if it is used more it would have a higher rate of allergies that the Rx stuff that is not used near as often?
I personally think that you should go with what your pedi recommends at this point. Isn't it what you are paying them for? You have asked her advice twice now.
