I've just started doing the couch 2 5k as i desperately need to lose weight and get fit.

Basically since school i've got a burning sensation in my shins and ankles whenever i run. Previous personal trainers and ones at the gym just told me to run through the pain and it would get easier. Anyway i mentioned this last night to the running coach and he said that it sounded like shin splints and that i should stop running as i could do some serious damage. I'm gutted, i was just starting to enjoy it.

Anyone any advice? Is there a way around this? Better shoes, technique etc? I've an appointment with the GP tomorrow as the coach said physio may help. The problem is, it's only a 9 week course and no doubt it would be months before physio.

TIA

If there's a running shop near you, go and get your gait analysed and get some decent trainers :-)
Good luck xx

I had the same. Good trainers help. Perhaps it would help running on soft ground like grass? Or see if treadmill makes a difference. But remember to really warm up good first. Also stretch out your shin muscles

Ive been running for 7 years now. Had the same problem in the beginning. Give yourself a couple of days rest and do the alphabet with your toes as shin splits are caused by tight calves!

Thanks everyone for the advice. They have slightly improved. I've got the 5k run on saturday so just need to get through that.
