Is anybody a social worker? And willing to talk to me about your job?

Long story short, Had my daughter at 19 so missed out on higher education past high school level. I have always been indecisive about what career I want, swinging between police officer, midwife, flight attendant etc, working out which I will enjoy most but also which will work best for my family.

I have been researching social work for a while now and it really interests me, I really think I'd be great at the job, it would mean going back to full time education (university) so I need to be sure!

Anybody willing to give any advice?

Do you love your job? How stressful/emotional do you find it? Does it work with your family?

Any help appreciated :)

I can't give you any advice from an experienced perspective but i'm about to start my masters in Social Work this September. One of the things that helped make my mind up to pursue a career in that field was a bbc documentary called "Protecting our children", it might be worth a watch :) it's a fly in the wall documentary in the lives of social workers and shows the struggles they sometimes have with their service users.

Hi :flower: I'm a social worker in a child protection team, have been for 6 years. It's all I wanted to do from the age of 13 and something I'm very passionate about. At times I love my job and other times I hate it. The politics, the pressure and the emotional stress can become too much at times. I don't know a single social worker who hasn't had time off for work related stress. I found it difficult juggling my job with home after having my second child (I only do part time but as an experienced worker my case load is really complex an the same number wise as when I was full time). So I applied for a post in a fostering team (generally known to be less stressful) and was offered the job... But I couldn't accept it!! My heart lies with child protection and as hard as it is I really couldn't do anything else. It's a tough job and you take a lot home with you and the rewards and recognition are few and far between. But when they do come it makes it all worth it. Good luck with what ever you choose to do :flower:
