Anyone had an underweight baby before?

Hey all,

I'm 7 weeks with no 2 and my pregnancy with no 1 went fine, except she was 14 days late and 6lb 9. My friend had the same midwife and had a LO 6lb 12 and she had growth scans for no2 because of it.
Just wondering what will happen, when I'll first see the consultant, when I'll have scans etc. can't ask my friend cos we've not told anyone yet!!

I'm no help as I have no idea what will happen yet but I had a low birthweight firstborn too, she was 5lb 2oz at 38+3 xx

Hi there I've had 2 baby's with what was considered low birth weight due to uterine growth restriction born both at 38 weeks weighing 5 pound 2 but were healthy I had scans from 28 weeks with both every 2 weeks progression was slow . I'm pregnant again & believe my ob in Nz told me id probably have a smaller baby this time so will wait in see how things go . Hope all goes well for you

I'm surprised they classed that as low birth weight. I believe to be officially classed as a low birth weight it's below about 5lb 8oz. My friend was 14 days late and her baby was 6lb 3oz and they never said she was a low birth weight? Maybe it's different in different hospitals, so many things are. Maybe you'll get a growth scan but I've never heard of it for that kind of weight.

My little girl was 14 days late and was born 6lb 3oz and nothing was mentioned that she was a low birth weight? She was just petite x x

To be honest I agree! I'm only 5 ft 1 and I don't think 6lb 9 is stupidly small but I think cos she was so overdue my midwife said 'if we'd known she was this small you'd have been having growth scans' and said if we had another we would. Also my friend had growth scans and her baby was bigger and not as overdue. My only concern was that I was losing weight for the last few weeks, I told the midwife but she didn't say much. I only put on a stone the whole pregnancy and struggled to eat much. My little girl was also quite long at birth but had lots of wrinkly skin and was very skinny. I'm happy to have the scans but I'm not worried this one will be too small.

I had all 3 of my children in Nz there average size baby are 8 pound so my baby's were below the 5 th percentile once born as they had stopped growing - things are different all over the world I'm guessing - my oldest was 6 pound 11 but was the norm 12 years ago.

My daughter was 5lbs 2oz and I had her at 39 weeks.

My 3rd baby was 4lb 11oz but I had high blood pressure which was left undetected until I was 36 weeks pregnant because they don't see you very often with 2nd/3rd/4th ect babies as they do with your 1st.

I ended up being induced at 38 weeks which culminated in an emergency c section and this tiny little baby being delivered from my tummy!! He was fine apart from his temp control and feeding so was on nicu for a week.

I have only had 1 extra growth scan and that was with my last baby (5th) as I had gestational diabetes and they wanted to make sure she wasn't too big. They told me she was going to be 9lbs +++ but I knew this wasn't the case as I could walk fine, sleep and get in and out of bed ok. She ended up being 7lb 15oz which was my 2nd smallest!!

Growth scans are not accurate!!

DS was two weeks late (induced) and weighed only 6lb 8oz. His original due date was November 25th and they kept putting my dates back, I eventually had him on December 19th.

DD was two weeks late (induced) and weighed 7lb 7oz. Her original due date was May 20th and again they put my dates back and i had her on June 10th.

This pregnancy they have already put my date back by a week, original due date was January 16th now it is January 23rd.

My LO was two weeks over and weighed 6lb 13, I was told to expect a big baby! They commented that my placenta was small but no one has ever mentioned it since.
The thing is I am tall and so is hubby.
I know most people find 1st tri stressful, but I really found 3rd tri stressful worrying about movements etc! Then to have a small baby and say your placenta is small.....
I am going to clarify with my midwife on this as my LO was only about 2-9th centile born

im surprised thats classed as low, my second was 2 days late and 6lb 3, here under 5lb is low birth weight x
