DS absolutely hates tummy time so we don't really do it. He's also never really been a big fan of lying down full stop (don't think he has reflux or anything though), so from about 5 weeks he's mostly been held upright as his neck strength has been solid since day one. Sometimes he likes his baby gym, but most playing is done sitting on our laps or in his baby saucer, jumper etc. As a result he has been sitting up completely unassisted since 4 months and loves standing up.

So my question is, has anyone had a LO that didn't do tummy time, and so never really learnt to roll? Is this ok? I'm not prepared to force my baby to do something he doesn't want to, and at this rate can almost see him skip rolling and crawling and going straight to walking.

My dd1 never rolled, apart from one day at 5 months (only for a day, then never again.) like your LO, she hated tummy time so I never forced it.
She sat at 5 months, cruised at 8 months, crawled at 9.5 and walked at 10 months. So yeah, rolling over wasnt important to her!

Dd2 was rolling around the room from 3.5 months, but she always loved tummy time. She sat at 5 months, crawled at 6 months and walked at 9.

Dd3 is also 4.5 months and she rolls back to tummy, and is beginnig to go tummy to back. She sits unaided already too but I do lay her on the floor too. She seems indifferent about tummy time, amd as soon as she starts moaning, I pick her up.

But I think your LO is absolutely fine!
Oh, none of mine were very strong at birth lol. They had proper floppy heads for the first couple of months!

Yep! This is my 6.5 month old exactly! He has always hated tummy time from the very beginning, to the point where he would just scream and scream until we picked him up. We've gotten him to the point that he will be on his tummy for short periods, but he won't try to do anything. He gets so upset that he'll put his face into the floor and just give up. Consequently, he's only rolled over completely by himself one time, and doesn't care to do it again. He also sits completely unaided, and if he ever crawls, it will be from the sitting position. He loves to stand, too, and I think he's just decided he's not going to do anything until he can walk. The doctor isn't worried at all because he sits well and bears all his weight on his legs, and it sounds like your son is the same way. I wouldn't worry; I think it's just our boys' personalities.

According to my mum, my older sister never rolled, crawled, cruised, or did anything except lie/sit there (usually crying) for the first year or two of her life. Her speech was completely unintelligible until she was four or five. By today's standards, she was seriously delayed in several areas.

Now in her early thirties, with a master's degree in mathematics, she's about to have her first fantasy novel published by Harper Voyager. She's married, works as an editor and has two little ones of her own, a girl and a boy.

She can talk. She can also walk fine. :haha:

I don't think you have to worry, your LO sounds just great. :)

Yep my dd was sitting unaided at 4 months. Had good neck control from birth (as does ds)
She crawled from 6 months old and ran from 10 months. It was something like 9 months old she worked out rolling from back to front fully to then move to other positions. She could do front to back sooner (or was it other way round??!!)

Thanks, Ladies! Good to know he is not alone. I'm not concerned about it, just curious as to whether other babies missed out rolling. I can't see him ever learning to do it if he never lies down!

My DD hates tummy time too we've tried building the amount of time up slowly but she screams blue murder! Not completed a full roll yet just goes on her side if she is after something and not sitting unaided as yet but loves to stand with feet flat with little support.

I said to my husband the other day that she will get up and run one day and miss out the rolling crawling etc it's what makes it so exciting when they don't follow the book lol x

My son is currently 8.5 months old and has rolled tummy to back quite a bit but has only rolled once from back to tummy a few weeks ago. I just hope he can figure it out but really I am sure he is fine. All babies develop differently.

DD rolled over around 5 months. She is perfect. Don't rush it, I know it's hard hun x It'll be ok.

For my two lo's, all of their doctors stressed how important tummy time was...to develop neck muscles and get them to start rolling...iir both of mine hated it but we did it anyway for a few minutes a day. I know that crawling is great for them, but wouldn't think rolling is a huge deal.

They will do it eventually :) it may be in an unusual order or at an unexpected time but they'll do it. The reason I know this is that most adults can roll over just fine so they must have picked it up at some point ;)

Joni hated tummy time. She sat up at 5.5 months and then didn't want to do anything else until about 10 months. She didn't crawl until her first birthday. She's going to be 3 in July and it feels so long ago and unimportant now that she was so immobile for so long. My son is four months and can roll quite easily. She must just have not been bothered to even try, I don't think. X

:haha: My daughter couldn't stand tummy time. She hated everything about it. I never forced it on her as she had amazing head control from birth, and she Sat unaided around 5 months. From there she finally started rolling around 8 months, army crawling for literally 2 weeks at 9 months, actually crawling/cruising for 2 or 3 weeks at 10 months, and walking at 11. I was so concerned about it, but I fi,ally figured out she'd do everything in her own time. :haha: since then, I've sort of let go of milestones now. :)

My daughters is 7 months and about to crawl but never rolled.

Malakai was about 7 month old when he rolled, but he managed to learn to roll one day, crawl the next day then roll the other way the day after that. i was also always told how important tummy time was but my LB used to smother himself, he could hold his head up, he just chose not to, so instead i would sit up on the sofa lay him on my chest and let him lift his head like that, he was actually pretty fast at holding his head so obv not doing tummy time wasn't too big a deal.

My daughter rolled from back to tummy at 12 weeks and NEVER learned to roll the opposite way. Now she sits and crawls and stands. All babies are different and some skip some skills on the way to walking! As long as they get to walking...I don't think its an issue. He sounds like he is doing great!

Sophie sat, went from tummy to sitting, crawled, pulled to stand and cruised before she rolled. She was 9 months when she finally did it!

Mine could roll to his side but never learned to roll completely over until he was 3 with the help of his occupational therapist. Once he started crawling I forgot all about it and it's a skill he's not needed.

My youngest absolutely loved to roll and started doing it way earlier than I expected, I swear before he was even 3 months. He hasn't stopped rolling ever since and he's now 17 months old! Nappy changes are definitely a challenge with him!

My eldest though never really rolled. I used to give him tummy time but he'd just moan. Then I remember the first time he rolled (or I think he did anyway). I put him on his playmat on his tummy, popped into the kitchen quickly, when I came back he was on his back. But then I can't be sure I'd left him on his tummy. He was about 4/5 months at the time. Then he didn't roll again until he was well over 6 months - in fact, I don't actually recall him rolling at all. He never crawled either - not sure if this could have anything to do with the fact that he hated being on his front so never really learnt it - so he was a bum shuffler! He doesn't really lay on his front now and he's 2.5. He generally sleeps on his side or back so I just guess he's not keen on being on his tummy.

Dd1 hated tummy time and rolled once at 6 months iirc then never bothered again lol, she was just mega laid back and didn't even crawl until 10-11 months. Dd2 is so different, rolled at 3 months and now at 6 months literally never stays on her back if you lie her down and is desperately trying to crawl!
