Hi Ladies,

I am looking to have a water birth and have been told I would not be given the injection to help the placenta to be delivered quickly so will be looking at a physiological third stage. I was just wondering what happended after the birth... do you stay in the pool a while... do you climb out and they then cut the cord.... how long did it take to deliver the placenta... what did it feel like.

Any water birth ladies please could you let me know your experience.

Thanks. xx

They TOLD you you won't have the injection? Can they not just give you it once you're out of the pool, if you so wish?

Anyway, I had a water birth and had decided against the injection. I stayed in the pool with LO on my tummy for about 10-20 minutes. I then got out to deliver the placenta. Except it wouldn't come. It took at least an hour of people poking my tummy, consulting doctors, putting in iv lines "just in case" and worst of all, me being unable to hold LO. :-( I lost a LOT of blood and they were talking about taking me to theatre, when we decided to try the injection anyway and 10 minutes later, the placenta finally came. Next time, I will have the injection as soon as the cord is cut. Saying that though, my recovery was amazingly fast (as they say happens with physiological third stage). My personal recommendation would be to get the injection but of course mine is an extreme case.

Yeah I would have thought the same that they could just give you the injection once out of the pool but they say they tend to not give you it when having a water birth but I might ask them if I can get out of the pool fairly quickly to have the injection as I also have anemia and don't want to risk loosing even more blood which I have been told is far more common when the placenta is left to deliver naturally. x

I had the injection while I was still in the tub! Baby came out, we cuddled and what not, cut the cord and then they poked me. Then the placenta started to come and I had to push twice to get it out. All in the tub. They rinsed me off and I got out to get stitches!

Most women, water birth or not, do not need an injection for the placenta. In fact, getting the injection without medically needing it can cause problems. Only about 5-10% of women really need the injection after birth, unfortunatly it has become common practice to inject all or most women.

Waterbirthed placentas have the same time frame as a land birth. Usually anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. Most placentas come out around 10-20 minutes after birth. If you nurse right away it will help contract the womb and expell the placenta. In a waterbirth you can either get out a few minutes after baby is born and have the placenta on land, or you can birth the placenta into the water. It's about 50/50 here.

I'm planning a waterbirth and I plan to probably get out and get in bed before placenta is delivered, but I am also have a homebirth, not a hospital or birth center.

I haven't had my baby yet, but NaturalMomma gives very good advice. That's what I've been told by my midwives as well. Placentas usually come naturally within about 30 minutes assuming you keep the cord intact (once you cut the cord, it's harder to deliver naturally, so you might end up needing the shot). It's also perfectly normal and healthy for them to take 1-2 hours as well, as long as you aren't bleeding too much. But whether you birth in water shouldn't make any difference to whether you can have the shot or not if you need/want it for some reason. The midwives I've spoken with all that that it's best to keep the cord intact and just be wherever you are most comfortable and able to stay warm and with baby skin-to-skin, whether that's in the pool or outside wrapped up in warm towels and blankets. It's keeping baby close, latched on if possible, and warm that's most important. I've spoken with several midwives about how delivering the placenta would work with a water birth, and they've all said that if you do decide to get out, more often than not the placenta actually plops right out when you stand up to get out of the pool anyway! It's usually very straightforward for water births because you're already in a good, active position for delivering it and the movement to get out of the tube can be very effective. My plan is to probably get out and deliver the placenta on land, but I would be happy for it to come in the water as well if I felt I needed some more time in there.

I had a water birth at home. We got out after five minutes or so. Waited the 20 minutes to cut the cord. Midwives ended up giving me a little herbal concoction to help with placenta detachment. So it took almost an hour total for the placenta to come out for me.

had the choice to stay in or get out - had planned to get out, but was too tired when the time came, so delivered placenta in the water. as for time, i'm really fuzzy about how long things took, but i didn't need an injection for it. as for what it felt like, a squishy blob coming out that didn't hurt nearly anywhere as bad as baby did coming out - wasn't a problem at all in terms of pain.

good luck! :flower:

I got out of the water to deliver the placenta, cannot even remember if i had the injection or not OH had LO held right next to me so i wasn't paying much attention, but it all depends on you, both my placenta's ( 1st and 2nd LO's) didn't take long at all to come out. X

I stayed in the water with baby on me for about 10 mins or so they cut the cord and gave me the injection in the water. I then got out to deliver the placenta. I don't understand why they've said you can't have that injection!? Did they explain why?

I've had 2 water births. The first one I was given the oxytocin injection while I was still in the tub. I delivered the placenta in the tub and we didn't actually cut the cord until after the placenta was delivered.

My second water birth, I had a different primary m/w and she wasn't comfortable with me staying in the tub (too hard to judge blood loss) so I got out shortly after delivery. It took a bit longer to deliver that placenta b/c I was afraid to push (I had a painful birth) but it was still out within 30 minutes. my dh cut the cord after I got out of the tub but before I delivered the placenta.

I had a water birth. Not that it's related, but my placenta took 1.5hrs to detatch, I was planning on a physiological third stage but ended up having to have the jab.

Next time I hope to have a physiological third stage though fx'd.

I got out, I *think* before OH cut the cord. And then delivered the placenta naturally (without injection) within about 20-30 mins, but it was my second.

I delivered my first naturally after around an hour.

I stayed in the pool hoping for a physiological third stage, but an hour later there was no sign, so I had to get out and have the injection. Placenta came 10 mins later, think if possible next time I'll get them to give me th einjection while I'm still in the pool.

What happens when you stay in the pool for an hour waiting for the placenta? Does it mean your baby is still attached to it for that whole hour?

I stayed in the water for 20 minutes. Then got asked to get out as there was blood filling up and she wanted to monitor blood loss. It came out after 10 more minutes. I had a natural delivery (no injection), but a complication in that I had a lot of blood loss and then retained products.

They cut the cord pretty much straight away (unless you don't want them too). So you just have a bit of cord dangling!

I didn't have the injection. Took about 10-15 mins after the cord was cut for the placenta to come out. I got out of the pool to deliver the placenta.

I had a waterbirth at home for my 2nd and the midwife doesn't use the injection. I got out the pool not long after he was born as he was a bit stunned from the quick birth and needed a bit of encouragement to breathe. I think it took about 20-25 mins for the placenta to come out.

My first (hospital birth on land) took 5 mins but that would be because they injected me when I was pushing, I don't recall actually consenting to have the injection.
