I'm confused. In NICU we were told under 60 was normal, but on the NHS page about bronchiolitis it says to contact your GP if breathing rate is of 50-60 breaths per minute. Another site gives an average of 30-40.

My daughter has a heart murmur and the GP at her 6 week check asked if her breathing was 'normal'. I said yes, because its under 60, but its usually over 50, always over 45. So now I'm confused.

For a newborn 30-60 and I believe that's up to 6 months old, I think if there's temp/ cough/ any concerns then over 50 maybe a concern but definitely over 60 baby would need to be checked over.

under 1 - 30-40bpm
1-2 25-35bpm
2-5 25-30bpm
5-12 20-25 bpm
over 12 15-20bpm

When Emma was in the SCBU they wouldn't let her out to be with me until she met several conditions, one was respitory rate ideally about 35. Not sure if that helps.

Thank you, I am sorry your son has been in hospital so often.

Each time Juniper has been discharged with resps over 40! (We went back to a&e as resps were 72 two days after leaving hospital, they monitored her for 24 hours and did a chest xray which found nothing, but didn't pick up the murmur?.. )
Maybe because she was newborn? The GP at her 6 week check said she was breathing normally when he examined her but didn't give me a number. but after finding the murmur he asked if she showed any breathlessness during feeding which I didn't think she did at the time.

I have been checking all night and it ranged from 36-52 so lower than yesterday, I will mention it at her specialist appointment.

Thank you all. I will be on edge watching her until this echo cardiogram appointment.

It is very common for 'murmurs' to be heard in children as their chest wall is so thin. I expect because she was in NICU and has had some breathing issues they want to check out her heart, but the murmur could still be nothing.
