I wondered if anyone had tried Baby Led Weaning (BLW) with their little ones? I did with my 5th baby, and I'll never wean the normal way again! Basically it means no spoon feeding at all, and no baby foods. You just trust in their instincts and let them eat small portions of what you have. It takes time, and a lot of mess, but totally worth it! I'll see if I can find some links :)

I've actually been advised by our doctor to do BLW with Aaron, due to his reflux making him really ill when we tried to give him purees.

So far his favourite things are cucumber sticks and flatbread. He eats hardly any of it, but at least he's starting to get used to different flavours and textures. I'm going to give him a lump of cheese today and see what he thinks of that.

Any ideas for other suitable starter foods?

thank u for the links, it's definately something i'm going to consider, though we're a little way off it yet. :)

Pasta twists are great, especially in a tomato sauce. Very funny for us mums too, watching baby try and catch them as they slip and slide

I really want to know more about this!

we did BLW with Rhys and would be happy to answer any questions

I know nothing, so tell me everything please!

we started weaning rhys when he was 4 months and 2 weeks. we gave him 2 weeks of purees before switching to blw. in those 2 weeks he had carrot and sweet potato (4 days of each) and then 4 days of carrot mixed with sweet potato.

when he turned 5 month we put him in his highchair and gave him toast, here you can see the size of the peices:

then we tried ricecakes with philly

we started with these two foods becuase they go mushy really easy and rhys just sucked them till they fell apart

we then moved onto veg... broccoli is great because it goes mushy, big chunks of carrot etc i cut them with crinkly scissors so rhys could hold them better some people use'baby safe feeders' if they are scared of choking.

the way i handled choking:
the first 2 weeks when rhys choked i jumped up, paniked and stuck my fingers down his throat... this scared rhys more than the actual choking! then one day i just sat there calmly patting him on the back in steady rythem until he dislodged it himself. this method worked much better and after another3 weeks i didnt need to pat him anymore and he just did it all himself

what else would you like to know

I have been giving Oscar puree. he has 2 teeth now and is fast coming up to 6 months.
Can I start BLW?
How do I switch?
I am a little worried about choking, should I be?

you can switch your son over to BLW quiet easily, although because he has teeth you do have to be careful of him biting big chunks of his food and trying to swallow them.

do you feed your son in a highchair? if not then i would switch him to a highchair so he can sit upright whilst he feeds himself. when you start BLW i would give oscar a few spoons of puree and then give him the fingerfood so hes not starving hungry and wont get frustrated with himself. Start with something simple like brocolli or toast and see how he takes to it. if you have any crinkly scissors (from elc) then you can cut the veg with those and the ridges will make it easier to hold

:D I gave Oscar some toast this morning. He didnt swallow much, hardly any, but he loved the experiance and the dog was very happy. I will try him with some veg later for lunch.

when i started BLW rhys lost weight because i didnt suppliment him with any puree so i would watch how much Oscar is actually eating... but then again rhys wouldnt eat off a spoon so what i was supposed to do lol
