Hi,

Wondering if any of you have tried this indian style baby hammock. I'm going to have a c-section w/2nd baby (vaginal 1st). My DD needed to be constantly rocked/bounced/carried in early months, only slept ON me after nursing in rocking chair. (She was later DX with sensory issues and ADHD) I won't be able to do that after a C-section if necessary. Looks like this:

Above is a video on how to set it up and with a baby in it at end, looks amazing, but it's not really used much here in USA, only a handful of reviews on amazon, though most were raving about it. Looks a lot lighter and better looking than a pack-n-play for travel to grandparents house too...any thoughts?

My mum lived in india with the embassy and had all my sisters there before coming home to the uk to have me, and apparently she bought something like this home and use it on me. It hung from the ceiling in a spring, and by all accounts I was very happy being bounced around in it. It was common place in India, but this was nearly 30 years ago.
She still talks about the baby hammocks and wonders when people will start using them in the uk as he is insistent they are the best thing ever!

Sorry can't be of more help :0)

Actually looks really good. Was a bit sceptical about the string but I love how easy and small it folds down.

Not sure if it's ok for their hips though. It seems to squish them up, so could lead to hip dysplasia. I wouldn't use it on a newborn.

I actually have a miyo baby hammock. The reviews are all very good - they talk about how well they sleep in them. I've never seen one of those Indian ones. I don't think they are as nice as the miyo.

Miyo have recently stopped distributing in the uk and (I think) you can only buy then from Australia or NZ. There might be independent stores in America, not 100% sure though. There are other makes out there though such as the amazona baby hammock which you can buy from amazon. Definitely worth looking in to it if your interested in the hammocks x

We were actually going to make one out of mesh like athletic short material for Mia, It doesn't put anymore pressure on their hips than say a bouncy seat and people leave their kids in those for hours with no affects on their hips.

If you use a proper baby hammock as a bed the risk of SIDS is low. If you have ever been in a hammock you will know how hard it is to roll over, it would be impossible for a NB to roll over in one. It cradles them but gives them room to move their arms and legs. You don't use blankets though unless you are swaddling or using a sleep bag.

By taking centuries-old techniques, combined with modern designs, the Miyo Baby Hammock mimics the environment of the womb to help the baby feel safe, relaxed and so able to fall asleep.

The design has been proven to help babies sleep.

Natural womb-like environment designed specifically for night and day sleeping
Teaches babies to self-soothe and establish good sleeping patterns
Gets baby to sleep in record time:
Over one third of babies sleep through the night by 6 weeks old 1
4 out of five babies sleep through by 4 months old 2
Over 95% of babies asleep within 10 minutes 3
Relieves symptoms of colic and reflux
Spine held in a neutral position with the weight evenly distributed 4
Prevents flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly)
Keeps your baby in the correct position as recommended for SIDS prevention
Helps stimulate memory and brain development
One of most compact and lightweight travel cots available
3 ways to suspend the hammock giving flexibility, portability and space-saving options and great value

Thanks everyone...I've decided I am going to use a hammock, but can't decide between Miyo type, which is similar to Hushmamok here in US, but really expensive, and Ghodiyu type...They have some vids on you tube showing babies really being soothed well in baby hammocks of various kinds.

This is the Hushamok:

we bought one that is very similar to the hushamok to use instead of a swing or bouncy chair. My one month old nephew came over and fell asleep immediately in it for over an hour.

I am an Indian and this is a very old cultural thing for us where at least 80% households use these. Even my mom and dad have been brought up in such hammocks (only that they were wood instead.) I have the same one as the video you have put up for my daughter, now 5yrs old, and am all set to use the same for my LO soon. These metal ones are fantastic as they are really light and we can carry them along on a holiday without giving it a second thought. I haven't really heard of SIDS with anyone using these hammocks. My brother just had a baby 2 months back and his LO is also happy in her hammock.

I liked this at first then as I was watching the video a few red flags popped up for me personally..

1) I wouldn't want a long piece of loose string hanging near my baby because it's a choking hazard
2) new born babies need to lay with their heads to one side in case spit up gets stuck in the air way, this seems to keep the body and head in an upright positition, my daughter choked on milk at about 8 months old, I was sat next to her and didn't hear a sound I only noticed she was choking when I saw her lips were blue and she was bright red/
3) I dont like that there is no security to the sides and if baby were to try to roll ect would baby fall out?
4) the string again... what if someone accidently pulled it like another child, and pulled too hard
5) I don't like the frame being that it looked flimsy and the hanging hooks looked insecure.

If you like it then buy it by all means but for me personally I don't think it's safe. xx
