My LO's umbilical cord dropped off at around 10 days and has still not completely healed. It looks like there is a red bubble coming out of her belly button which weeps and leaves a pale green discharge on her clothes. After some searching I found it is called an umbilical granuloma. I took her to the GP at 6 weeks who said that it looked like it had overhealed (confusing) and gave me alcohol wipes to dry it out. She did mention that if it doesnt get better they might need to apply silver nitrate at the hospital to cauterise it but when I went back when she was 8 weeks she just gave me more wipes.

She is nearly 10 weeks now and it still looks the same, I am going to make an appointment to see the GP again but just wondered if anyone else's LO has/had a similar thing? If so how long did it take to go away? Did it shrink or just fall off?

Thanks :)

my LO had one too i was told to take her to the doctors and they will put nitrate on it but the doctor said its fine to be left and will go on it own , and now at almost 1 year it has. but if you do take your LO to get nitrate on my hv said to put Vaseline around it so it wont burn the skin as apparently some doctors aren't to careful.

My LO had this hun. It was really red and bulging and he always ended up with discharge on his vest. I was told exactly the same. Thankfully it is drying out now. The lumpy bit is still there but it is all crusty now. Just waiting for it to fall off. It was at its worst around 8 weeks. He is now 13 weeks. Hopefully hers will dry out soon too :) xxx

My lo had this too and it kept getting bigger so my doctor treated it with nitrate. He had 2 treatments and it was gone in about 3 weeks. It didn't hurt him and my doctor was really careful and used Vaseline each time. After each treatment it went black and just came away.xx

Ruby had this. One dr said it needed silver nitrate, another said no that's old fashioned and unnecessary, it'll heal by itself, which it did.

My LO had one too. Had it treated with silver nitrate. Took about 4 treatments - no problems at all, except that the health visitor did it one of the times and forgot to put the Vaseline on, burning the skin around thee belly button. Healed up in a couple of weeks with no long term effects.

We had one which just appeared out of nowhere when he was about 10.5 months. Took him to the doctor and he said to give it a week and it should be going down, and to bring him back if not. A week later it was going smaller so I left it, and now at 13.5 months it's completely gone.

we had one i read up on the silver nitrate thing and came across - on the health visitors website no less lol - about a salt treatment that you can do at home...i did this and it worked within 10 days it just dried up and shrank...had go look at it and she said it was fine - i would get someone to look at it first though just to make sure salt treatment is appropriate

My LO has one, he's had one silver nitrate treatment, it's shrinking slowly. The GP did say to bring him back after 2 weeks for another treatment but it's no longer weeping and is just crusty and shrinking so I've left it, all I do is bathe it in salt water once a day

When my LO had one I was told by the health visitor to put salt on it and leave for 10 mins twice a day, did this for about 5 days and cleared right up!

My LO had exactly the same thing. His cord fell quite early but I knew it hadn't healed properly and the doctor prescribed some cream, it's called Fucidin ointment and it cleared up after a couple of days.. try asking your doctor for that xo

My lo had one at 4 weeks old, she had the silver nitrate treatment but it got infected, so we were given some cream to put on it to clear the infection then after a couple of weeks the granuloma went black and fell off! Her belly button has looked normal ever since xx
