Hi ladies,

Hope you are all keeping well, Thought i would add this piece of information for anyone that is feeding aptamil and having wind/colic/stomach problems with their babies. I am the mother of a beautiful baby boy he will be 6 weeks this sunday. At about 4 weeks old he began showing signs of serious discomfort, unlatching off his bottle an bending backwards crying in pain, when put down after a feed just would not settle and pretty much cried all the time. Myself and hubby are first time parents so this was very distressing for us too see baby in so much pain, also we were getting little to know sleep and were like walking zombies, after being at my weekly weigh in i spoke to the nurse who suggested to change baby to aptamil comfort feed that he was probably colicing, taking her advice and at our wits end we bought some of it and made the swap that day from aptamil one to comfort. Day went by and baby seemed somewhat more relaxed but still crying hysterically , trying to feed but just kept swinging away from bottle. So i turned to the internet and then seemed to come to the conclusion that our boy had reflux, distraught i rang my gp who agreed and prescribed zantac, 2ml a day for 2 weeks. 2 days went by and nothing was working, both of us were pulling our hair out. So saturday morning we snapped and decided to go to a different doctor as my usual gp does not work on weekends. at this point we were both convinced that something was seriously wrong with our baby. After having a full check over by this gp, (who we have swapped over to now to be our babys doctor)The doctor stood up nad said your baby is perfect, he is just starving, both my husband and myself sat in shock at what we had been told, the doctor explained that aptamil is a foreign formula and was imported and is very watered down formula, and there fore was literally hydrating our baby but not filling him, so wind was filling his belly, note why we could never get a burp out of him, including wth gripe water!!so doctor suggested we swap to SMA hungry baby formula and said with no problems that we would see a changed baby in 48 hours. Well 3 feeds later of SMA an our baby was burping and tooting like crazy, stopped hysterically crying and started finishing his feeds, it took a little while to start finishing feeds due to build up of gas in his belly, but rest assured as doc said we have a new baby one week later!!!!:happydance: im not saying that aptamil is a bad formula, but if any of you moms out thre are having issues similar too what i have spoke about, please speak to your doctor about it, it will save you an your baby a lot of sleepless nights and pain. hope i have helped at least some one out there with this info :)

Hi are you in the UK? I'm intrigued to know if it's made all in the same place or not as Aptamil is fine for our baby at present.

Hi.
I'm glad you have found something that works for your baby, and that you and baby are happier now.
However different formulas work for different children, some are more suited to different formulas than others especially if they have a sensitive stomach, and it isn't necessarily that anything is wrong with the formula itself.
We have used aptamil with no problems for a long time, however DD didn't get on at all with cow and gate. Same as you, crying, not taking bottle, trying to get away from it etc. she is also fine with Sma and other brands. Amongst my friends it also seems to be the same thing, some children will onlu drink ready made not powdered etc, its just some children just don't agree with some formulas.
So while I agree that you have done the right thing switching the formula I don't agree that it's anything to to with aptamil being imported and watered down and I think this will start to panic people about aptamil. All food and drink products go through rigourous testing to make sure they are safe and healthy for children to consume and I wouldn't want this post to put off anyone using aptamil. I'm not meaning to contradict you and I know it's what you were told, I just think that the formula isn't the problem, it's different babies prefer different formulas.

Hi ladies,

Im in ireland , absolutely agree that some babies just dont get on with some formulas, everyone is different, was not my intention at all. I did however post about it just in case any other women were having problems so that they would consider a change of formula. Just thought id let people know what our experience was with it. Hoping i may have helped someone.

Glad you got to the bottom of your problem with poor little one. We use Aptamil exclusively now after 6 weeks of breastfeeding and it's been amazing for us, the powder and the premade formula. He puts on tremendous weight. Different strokes for different folks.

We feed Aptamil with no problems :)

Aptamil has a blend of pre biotics in it that just doesn't agree with some babies, it can make them very windy with loose stools. SMA tends to work well for babies who don't get on with Aptamil. As previous posters have said, it's not the formula at all it's just an individual thing for each baby. Both mine got on really well with Aptamil, no issues at all. I know you are only repeating what you were told but I seriously doubt what your Doctor said is true. Also I am a bit confused as to why your Doctor said it was imported as both Aptamil and Cow and Gate are made in Ireland where you live.

Yes aptamil is made in Ireland it's sister companies with cow and gate. They would get in trouble if it was watered down. I think aptamil as someone else said can cause probs due to the prebiotic blend plus it is a very frothy formula. My little boy is on aptamil he constantly has bellyache but think it a from the frothiness so using dentinox to take out the froth.
