Hi all,

My father's family is Syrian. This is our second child (don't know gender yet) but we'd like to honor the heritage and name our child something arabic. However, we're looking for something "diet" Arab, something that's more americanized. My parents did this with my brother and named him Sami. It's a wonderful name for a boy, but seeing as it's my brothers name... it's already taken, haha.

I really like the name Zayn. It's perfect for our "diet" Arab guidelines, but my OH has rejected it because of that stupid kid in One Direction making all the fuss. :dohh:

Any ideas?

Hi! My husband is Egyptian and I'm franco-anglo-Canadian so we also want names that are "diet-Arab" (love the expression!). For girls I feel there are lots of options that work well - cultures seem to mix girl names a lot, and names that sound feminine in one language often do in the others as well. Boy names are harder!

It would be great, if you wanted to talk some more about names and the mix of cultures and all that good stuff. I'd love if you PM me! :D

So for us, we went with Nora for our little girl and Adam for our boy. Adam is THE ONLY name I found fit perfectly in the three languages I needed. Zane/Zayne is great, I think One Direction will be soon forgotten and shouldn't be an issue...
What did you name your first child?

I know a girl named Rawan, and I always thought it was a beautiful name! (She is Saudi Arabian)

I'm not sure if it has Arabic origin, but how about Zayd? It's similar to Zayn but doesn't have the One Direction link.

There is a rather high proportion of kids of arabic descent at the school where I teach. These are some of my favourite "diet-arab" as you call them names. I hope it helps!
