hi my LO is 11 1/2months. hes very vocal and chatty but no real words yet. i have head him saying mamama dadada but not with meaning and hes not saying that at the moment he seems to be favouring other sounds right now. he understands lots of things like give a kiss, brush your teeth etcso im sure its all going in there! he also understands no but just ignores it- is this the same for most 1 year olds?

hes walking well now so has been concentrating on that for a while but just wondering when we might hear some real words.

when did your LOs say their first real word? when did they say mama dada with meaning?

Still waiting! My LO babbles non-stop but nothing that makes any sense. I haven't even heard her make the "mama" sound. She can identify several objects or recognize words but won't say anything!

I think the average age for first real word, in context, is around a year.

As for the no thing, I think it's pretty normal. My LO usually stops or hesitates a bit but then just goes back to what she's doing and ignores all subsequent "no"s.

ah thanks for your reply! its good to hear from others.

yes when i say no he sometimes hesitates, or sometimes laughs like its a game and then just carries on!

think the toddler years are going to be fun but tiring! xx

Thomas said 'bye' at 18 months. Then nothing until almost 2, when he started adding in a few words here and there. Now he says any and every word he hears!

My 8 month old learnt 'dada' a few months ago and says it all day long, she hasn't bothered trying any others since. She also knows give a kiss, are you coming? (to be picked up) and her little arms go up and I ask if she wants bottle or biccie for rusks or rice cakes.

My LO said car at 13 months then by the time he was 14 months he'd learned mum and dada in context, cow, bear, gone, pear, cat and dog.

Ciara is exactly the same. She's just turned 1. She does lots of sounds including 'dada', 'mama', 'nana' etc but nothing in context. She too is now walking confidently so seems to have been concentrating on the physical.

I met with a friend the other day whose LO is 2 months younger than Ciara. She was saying 'daddy' as clear as anything. But she's not mobile at all, not even trying to crawl yet. Ciara was cruising confidently at that age

Also, yes, I'm sure Ciara understands 'No' but ignores it :-). She definitely understands a lot

my lo can say mamma and daddy in context if i walk out the room its mum mum mum mum and when she sees daddy its the same she waves and says b b b bye :) she can say up bottle hiyah wuv you shes been very vocal from a really young age started saying dadda about six months i filmed it but cant seem to upload it x

thats what i was just thinking lilly is putting all her effort into communicating she can crawl but shes not even attempting to stand or walk :flower:

Seems they choose one or the other! Thomas was cruising at 6 months, which seems totally bizare to me now as Sophie can't even roll, let alone crawl or stand or cruise!

I reckon Sophie will talk ealier than Thomas did.

Paige didnt say her first word until 14 months. She babbled dadada mamama etc from 5ish months but her first proper word was 'baby'.

By the time she was 18 months, she was vet advanced with her speech and still is now. I definitely wouldnt worry at 12 months. Its totally normal :D

Amber's first word 'mama' and then started saying 'no' quite a lot which we thought was quite funny and Hayden's at the noise making stage but not forming words yet. DH hopes it will be 'dad' as he's spending more time with him now that he's working part time but we'll see! :)

I agree babies are either walkers or talkers. My lb walked early'ish and has always been a chetterbox but still hasnt got many words... he says in context - mama, dada, doggy/dog, baby, moooooo (for cow).

I certainly wouldnt worry too much. I think there is a lot of confusion with words, you hear people say my darling daughter was saying mama at 6 weeks (just an example obviously hehe), which a lot of babies do - my little man was 'saying' dada from about 4 mths, but certainly not in context... so as with everything it is how it is interpretated. BTW I am not saying that directly to anyone on here - just as a general statement :-)

Only within the last 2 weeks has Lane begun mama/dada with meaning.

thanks all! im not worried about him at all sounds like its perfectly normal not to have real words at 11 1/2 months, especially as he seems to have concentrated on learning to walk.

i wonder what it will be! he does copy mooo for cow and went through a phase of copying 'cah' for cat but now its just babble and chat. will wait and see what he might say!

xx

All babies learn at a different pace, I don't think they become really vocal until 18 months - 2 years.

My LO might be an exception to the walk or talk rule. He was sitting unaided at 4 months, army crawling at 6, crawling at 7, and walking at 10 months. He can say hi, bye, daddy, mommy, dog, and bubble (referring to bubble guppies, but I used to call him bubba so it just kind of transcended from that). We also live in a bilingual home so he hears both Chinese and English on a regular basis, but from what I can tell can't say anything in Chinese yet.

He's always been a huge talker though. He's been babbling since 3 months saying "buh buh buh" and hasn't stopped since. I feel like I'm already dealing with a toddler who is never quiet, when he's awake there's ALWAYS noise coming out of him. He actually woke up 2 newborns at the park yesterday because he was singing loudly and yelling "hi" to everyone who came into the park.

My DS1 was also an exception to the walk or talk rule - he did neither early! :haha:

His first word was 'cat' at around 13/14 months I think, but no mama or dada... he didn't start adding other words until 16 months. He has made up for it since though, we have proper conversations with him now and his pronunciation and vocabulary are both excellent for his age.

My LO said her first in-context word at 9 months ("baby") and she's learned several more since then. "Mama" isn't one of them though. She's been babbling it for months but I still don't think she knows the context.

I agree that babies often seem to suspend language development to focus on physical development, and vice versa. My LO was very focused on mobility up until she said her first word, at which point she stopped caring about learning to walk and focused completely on learning new words. Then a month later she took her first steps and became very focused on walking and isn't talking as much.

Anyway, from what I've read most babies say their first in-context word around 12 months but for some it doesn't happen until a bit later and that's still totally normal. I wouldn't be worrying at this point :flower:
