So ladies as some of you mite know I had said all along that I really didn't want to have my baby on the leap day but not being due till the 7th March & a first baby the chances were slim anyway. However that morning I lost my plug but had no pain or signs.
The next day Thursday 1st March my hubby & I had a meeting with a builder as we are currently trying to find a contractor to build our house. The meeting was in Carrickfergus which is about a 40 mile trip for us. On the way up in the car I started to feel my back getting a bit sore so asked hubby to slow down a bit. Once I was out of the car however the pain went away. On the way back home again pain returned really bad - felt like all the bones in my spine were knocking together. Got home a put a heat pack on & that eased me. Just put it down to the motion of the car as a felt fine. Had an appointment with the midwife at 3pm so headed off to it & felt fine. Described to her want had been happening but she didn't seem overly excited just said it's a good sign. After the midwife I went to see my beautition & book in for a wax & what not, she said she cud take me on Saturday.
Got home & pains kept coming sporadically the rest of the evening & my friend advised me to put the tens machine on which I did & it was amazing. Pain continued through the night every half hour or so in to Friday.
Not much happened during Friday other than wearing tens machine all day pains continued sporadically never taking out a distinct pattern sometimes 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 mins. Hubby had hired an upholstery cleaner to clean our sofa over the weekend & he was setting that up, I went to the bedroom to charge my phone & I lay down on the bed (hubby's side) & ended up having a nap for about half an hour. Went back out to the living room & said to hubby I mite wear the tens in bed tonight as I'd just had a lovely nap. But I'd need to read the manual to make sure it was safe. So I grabbed the book & sat down at the table to read when suddenly my waters get with a loud pop - hubby heard the pop at the other side of the room but her thought he'd spilt water out of the carpet cleaner!! lol. This was about 7:30pm.
So I went got cleaned up, changed, hubby rang the hospital & my mum & headed to the hospital. At hospital I was hooked up to monitors & pains coming every 3mins. Was 2cm dilated & cervix was very very soft. Was admitted and moved to a side room. Got the tens back on & went to bed. Pains continued until 2:30am Saturday than everything stopped & I fell asleep.
By 11.30am Saturday pains hadn't returned I sent hubby home from the hospital as he was exhausted & not going to be any use to me if he didn't get sleep so my mum came down to stay with me. Midwife said to me that I was still in early labour & would need to keep mobile if I wanted to get thing started again. So from 11:30am - 4:30pm I paced the floors, worn the tens & keep turning it up & up. BTW my blood pressure was starting to get higher & higher. Approaching 4:30pm I had the tens on the highest setting at the highest intensity so I asked for some further pain relief. I was then moved swiftly to the delivery suite!
. Progress I thought. Got hooked up to gas & air. WOW what stuff!! But my bp was a big concern for the doctors. By now I'm still only 3cm. Bp been taken after every contraction every 3mins & creeping up bottom line approaching 100. Consultant was called & she said if bp went over 100 I would need drugs to lower it. It was now about 6pm mum left & hubby came back.
Had a scan only to find out baby only to find out that the baby had turned back to back, which lead to a few very painful internal examinations to try & turn baby back into the right position, to no avail.
Labour stopped again.
discussed a few options but decided to have a hormone induced drip to start contractions again.
This worked wonderfully well & very soon I was 7cm & still on g&a, however baby still back to back & still receiving internals to try & turn. I decided to try some pethdine. Ended up with two shots over the course of the next few hours. Next part I dont remember too much about as I was off my face!!!
I remember bouncing about on a ball & sitting backwards on a chair. Then they made me lay down on the bed again on my left side in a finally attempt to get baby to turn. It was so painful laying on my side I thought my spine mite snap!!
A final internal revealed that I was now fully dilated & ready to push.
After pushing for the good part of an hour in several different positions & almost breaking my hubby's arms in the process. The doctor came in to discuss other options. We agreed to try vacuum & if vacuum failed it would be an emergency section. Bearing in mind my bp was still sky rocketing.
Everything moved very swiftly after that, moved to theatre, received an epidural & proceeded with the vacuum, but unfortunately this failed.
So was then sectioned & Baby Ellen was born at 7:46am on Sunday 4th March, weighting in at 6lbs 6oz.
It's was hard after the delivery as I didn't get the skin to skin contact that I wanted & didn't get to hold her. She was just flashed under my nose told she was a girl then taken away. I was in recovery for about 2hrs, Ellen had to be in an incubator as her temperature dropped, so I didn't get to hold her for was seemed like forever. But eventually got to hold her & breastfeed her & she took on to it like a pro!!!
I was catheterised & didn't regain to feeling in my legs until late on Sunday so had to relay on the midwives dressing & changing her & bringing her to me for feeds. But got on my feet on Monday & we haven't looking back since.
Home yesterday & still doing great!
