My little girl is just nearing 5 months old. She is strictly formula fed. She is a pretty big baby with a big appetite. She was never small, nearing 9 lbs when born! Anyway, I have been giving her some rice cereal daily, but Im thinking I may try and give her some sweet potatoes tonight. When did you start feeding your LO food? THANKS

Fox is nearly 5 months and he has nibbled on cucumber and steam carrot. When he can pick it up and put it in mouth then he can eat.

I have never done baby rice.

Evelyn's doctor had her start after her 4 month appointment (the AAP recommends starting between 4-6 months if you're not breastfeeding). I went and bought all of the "First Stage" foods from Earth's Best and I have been giving her a new food every week since. :)

5.5months, he didn't take to the rice cereal but had fun with the kumara wedges. You can try giving them to her as wedges and let her try to eat it herself, best before bath time, she'll eat what she wants and it's not too stressful at this age.

I agree. When they can pick it up and put to mouth, then they are ready. We started offering food around 5 months. Honestly, not much passed his lips (like, a significant amount) until he was closer to 1. He would eat, just not anywhere near a full meal. Food is for fun until they're one. With milk being the main source of nutrition. X

It's better to wait until six months. As recommended by the AAP. Their digestive system isn't mature enough until then Even if they have interest in food.

I started at 6 months but he would be grabbing at my food from three months old. He eats everything now. Sweet potatoes and carrots are great starter foods.

Six months, i agree baby rice can constipate them, i did oatmeal to start with mixed with bm or formula:)

I started at 4months with just rice as my child was/is soooo greedy!!

I started with rice but now she has all sorts of fruit and veg blended up! Sometime on its own other times with rice!

I also make a decent amount then put it in ice cube trays and freeze then pop it in zip lock bags and just get one or two cubes out at a time! It was really slow and hard work to begin but now she's almost 6 month and in a fab routine and opens her mouth for the food really well!

I read somewhere that it can take a baby 13 tastes before they decided if they like it! So be patient and good luck xx

It is better to wait until around 6 months, I always encourage that when threads like this come up but I started just before then, my son was one of the exceptions and was so ready. You could try offering a stick of cucumber or something as see what your LO does? You'll soon see if it's the right time or not x

Same here. I think its best to wait until as close to 6 months as you can. I started around 5 1/2 months with DS2, just a few spoonfuls at a time to learn swallowing. Didn't start full on feeding until after 6 months though.

My pediatrician advised me to start around 4 months with 1st stage foods. I waited tho until she was 5 months. I started out with sweet potatoes and then did applesauce and now she has tried out green beans, squash, bananas, peaches, pears. She actually takes the spoon from me and puts it in her mouth on her own. So funny and so messy!

Oh, I was advised to try one food for 3 days b/4 adding another to make sure there wasn't any adverse reaction to it.

She had some sweet potato last night. She liked it! I bought the earth best organic, but just to try out. But I think I'm going to start making my own.

Hey Jess! Good to " see" you old friend! Regarding your post, with my first baby... I started rice cereal at 4 months, then purees at 6 months, but anytime now will be fine for your baby. I really think it just depends on mom and baby in each case. I see you tried sweet potatoes! Bet you got some cute pics of that lol! Anyhow, with my second baby I'm going to wait closer to 6 months to start cereal followed by purees at a little over 6 months. Nursing is going great, so I'm not going to rock the boat right now. Once I start with feeding foods there's no turning back so I'm in no rush this time. I think first time moms are excited for this kind of stuff, but with my second I'm already meal planning and feeding my toddler,so if I can wait to add the baby into the mix for a bit longer, I will! Funny how that works I think. But I did make all of my own baby food the first time, and I will do it for this second one, so if you have an questions or anything, just message me. I'm posting a pic of jayla for you to see.. Wish I could post a pic in our private messages to each other, but I can't figure out how to do that. I see Gracie in your profile pic, so cute! They are getting so big!!! Can't believe how time just flies, it's crazy!

Hi Jess! Glad you guys are doing well. I love seeing pictures of Gracie! Jayla is good, time is flying! She loves to sit and play but couldn't be bothered with our " baby" toys. She wants to grab and chew whatever toys her big sister is playing with. I love having my two girls, they adore each other and I love seeing the sister bond in them already. Excited for a fun Christmas this year. Last year on Christmas our parents open a gift of the ultrasound picture of jayla to announce that we were pregnant... Gosh that seems like ages ago. Anyhow here are some Christmas-y picks of my girls
