As this was my first baby, I really didn't expect at 39weeks for my waters to break!!! In fact, I only bought/packed my hospital bag the evening before my waters broke........
27th Sept
1am: Having gone to bed early the evening before, i stirred slightly and hearing a 'pop', I knew instantly that my waters had broken..... Jumping out of bed, my waters literally gushed everywhere (I was only expecting a trickle but this was exactly how it's portrayed in the movies!!!)......
No contractions as a warning though!
I woke my husband who preceded to gather my things as I had a quick shower.
2am: Having phoned labour ward, we were told to head in to get checked out... Then we were sent home!
11am: labour ward again! I was offered a speculum examination and it turns out I wasn't effaced so were sent home again! luckily I only live 5 minutes away from the hospital!
2:30pm.... Labour ward....the midwife was a lot more thorough and gave me an internal and reassured me that I won't be sent home..... It turned out I was 5cm! Baby was back to back which made it more painful! The hospital was really busy though and as a high risk emergency c sec case came in, I was left in an assessment bay without pain relief, without a midwife for what felt like an eternity!
About 5pm I was transferred to a room.......
7pm I felt this strong urge to push........
The midwife came in as I buzzed and decided to do another internal.... It turns out I was only 7cm but baby's back to back position meant he was pressing against nerves hence feeling the urge to push so early! I found the pain tolerable but the urge to push hard to ignore and after a couple of hours I opted for an epidural (not what I had planned at all, but I would rather that, than at 7cm pushing against my cervix and causing swelling which could of prolonged labour)
9 pm I was given the epidural.... I could still move my legs freely which was great and it wasn't all that bad having to lie on the bed and have constant ctg monitoring..
Third midwife took over.....
After another examination at 10:30pm, it was found that I was fully dilated although a tiny bit of cervix remained in the way, so it was just a bit of a waiting game!
At 11:30pm I was ready to push!
They called the obstetrician in due to the decelerations and my heart rate (170bpm!) who decided to put a clip on babys head to check they weren't confusing our heart rates...... Turns out they weren't :/!
The ob suggested using a ventouse to speed things up- I decided to push with all my energy after hearing that..... I didn't want an assisted delivery!!! My pushing worked!!! They were worried I would tear though so after asking my permission, decided to do an episiotomy..... I continued to push for a little bit and my baby's head was out!!!
On the 28/09/2012 at 0:24am, baby Freddie was born weighing 7lb6oz and 51cm long! Active labour lasted 8h20mins and the placenta was delivered in 6 minutes!
Episiotomy recovery really isn't that bad!
Eeek Freddie has woken up for a feed so I better end it there!![Smile :) :)](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
