Just found out that my baby boy has 1 kidney. I'm having a follow up in 6 weeks and they mentioned the possibility of "finding" it elsewhere in his body (like lower down by his pelvis?) but I think that possibility is pretty unlikely. Anyone else experienced this? Google says it's no big deal and he should live a normal life but a missing organ seems like a pretty big deal to me...

I've no advice but just wanted to say I hope all turns out fine :hugs: xx

I was born with only one kidney 37 years ago and, aside from having to be extra careful about UTIs and not being able to donate a kidney if I wanted, i really haven't had any meaningful effects from it. I know I would probably still be worried if the condition turned up in my baby, but try not to worry if everything else looks okay with him. As strange as it seems, a missing organ CAN sometimes be no big deal.

Updated to add that testing after I was born showed my second kidney was present, but less than 5% normal size and nonfunctional.

My niece was born with only one kidney. She is now three years old and as far as I know she is perfectly fine. No need to worry!

My mom was born with one kidney and two uteruses. She's fine :)

I was just coming in to say a woman with one kidney usually has 2 uterus's. It's actually not terribly uncommon.
I work as a midwife and when we come across a woman with 2 uterus's you can be quiet sure they will only have 1 kidney. Now with ultrasounds people know so much sooner. As for a boy I don't know if that means they have something extra too.

I have a friend who was born with 3 kidneys. She's perfectly fine & just is vulnerable to get UTI's.
