My son is 5 months - nearly 6 months and he has tried brocoli and cucumber and baby yogurt! But need ideas on what else he can have?

He loves playing with all his foods and is very happy trying things so just need more ideas please I'm new to all this but don't want to go to purees!

The very first things we tried were steamed broccoli and cauliflower, roasted carrot and parsnip sticks, mashed potato, and pita with dip (we did pea and mint dip, but hummus is an easy option too). Also, I've found crumpets (well, slices of) are really great as they hold any dip well and are easier to pick up than toast slices.

Basically, anything you eat. If you're having roast potatoes, try those. Or if you're having pasta, do some of that. I know for us, I didn't find she was really able to pick things up and chew at them well til about 6.5 months, so there might just be lots of playing still. But he'll get there. I think just trying lots of different things is really good to start.

I just tried my 6 month old on foods this week. I didn't want to do purées this time either. A few girls have some fab suggestions on my post about adobe needed couple if posts down. I tried avocado and mashed a bit up and did sticks and she loved grabbing the spoon as ate half the avocado mush. Then I tried her with toast fingers with some avocado on and she loved it. Just mushed the toast up then started to eat it. Couldn't believe it. Gonna try roasted parsnip and carrot for her tonight with garlic and have a bit myself nom nom x

If you're planning on BLW, just give whatever you're eating. You can cut things into stick shapes if you want but there's no real need. Just make sure you leave out salt, honey and whole/big pieces of nuts when you cook it, and cut grapes and cherry tomatoes in half before giving them to LO. That's it - give it to LO and let him take the lead :)

Foods I find work the best for us: strawberries, peaches (peeled), cantaloupe, watermelon, tomato wedges, greek yogurt, applesauce, toast fingers, oatmeal, roasted butternut squash, chicken breast, pork chops, pasta with tomato sauce, french fries, mashed potatoes, pancakes, grilled cheese, etc, etc.
I literally feed her whatever I am eating or what I have in the house.
My LO does not like veggies... I figure we'll get there when she is ready!

Avocado and sweet potato, slices of pear, mango and toast strips were a hit at the beginning. :)

]We didn't do real baby led weaning, so we cheated and fed her bits of salmon. She loved it. Banana and avocado were also two of her earliest foods. Here's a way to give banana so that he can self-feed:
  1. Cut the banana in half.
  2. Take one half, go an inch or so below the first cut and cut the peel, but not the fruit.
  3. Remove the ring of peel at the end of the banana half.
What you should be left with is a banana "handle" (the part with the peel), and a bit of banana sticking up out of it. The baby can grip the peel and gnaw on the banana that's sticking up. As he gnaws down, you can cut more peel off. I saw this on youtube and tried it, but as I said, I didn't end up doing real BLW, and ended up just feeding her small bites with occasional self-feeding until her fine motor skills improved.
