That's a bit of gobbledeegook to me - but hey - it only takes one little swimmer. Try not to let it get you down, and chat to the consultant next week. Make sure you write down any questions you have, cuz if you're anything like me, you get all emotional and then your mind goes blank.

Good luck next week :hugs:

Vol - ok
pH - ok
vitality - normal is 75% viable so you're a little short. (how long they live)
count - 40 million is normal (how many sperm per sample)
motility - 50% or more with forward progression is normal. (how they move, and if they move forward or in circles or too slow, etc.)
morphology - 30% or more with normal forms (sperm have to have a head and a tail. morphology deals with sperm that have no tails, two tails, wonky shapes etc.)

There ya go :)

ah count was 23 million so low on everything sob sob !

Sorry to hear about the results hun, its never easy to hear such results but it is better to find out sooner rather than later.

From what I can gather, the UK medical system is much more behind in terms of fertility treatment than what it is here in Australia, so even though you guys have only been trying for 6 months you now know that there is evidence of infertility with yourself and your OH, so I would be asking your GP if you can get an early referral to a fertility specialist.

I hope i'm not daunting you by all of this but my hubby has very low motility, count etc so i'm quite educated with treatments for male factor infertility.

I won't tell you not to stress because thats impossible, but definitely ask for an early referal to a FS at your next appointment hun. Sending you huge hugs and if you have any questions i'm more than happy to answer them for you :hugs:

Hi, sperm are so affected by life syle and diet. There are so many things you can do to help. There are some goo books one by a doctor called Marion Glenville and another by Zita West. They both explain what can be done to help. The Zita west book I have recently bought and it has a good section in it on sperm count which makes it clearer to interpret the results. Hope it helps. If you need more info let me know!

There is good news, male fertility problems are easier to treat then female fertility problems!!! :hugs:

I disagree, they aren't easier to treat because most of the time they CANNOT be "treated".

There are ways to get a woman pregnant with sperm that are low in count/motility etc but unfortunatley that is usually through IVF.

Generally speaking, couples who are dealing with male factor infertility have only IVF to get pregnant.

I don't in any way want to freak the OP out, just kind of stating the facts that men are not easier to treat than women. It is totally dependant on the individual and their problem.

Most of the time the fertility specialist will want 2-3 SA's done to make sure the first one wasn't tested wrong, or was left on the bench for too long etc.

Sometimes it can be improved with the basics eg - cutting down on alcohol, quitting smoking and drugs, improving diet, wearing boxers instead of briefs, staying away from saunas and hot tubs etc, but in many cases its just one of those things that cannot be fixed.

* The concentration of spermatozoa should be at least 20 million per ml.
* The total volume of semen should be at least 2ml.
* The total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.
* At least 75 per cent of the spermatozoa should be alive (it is normal for up to 25 per cent to be dead).
* At least 30 per cent of the spermatozoa should be of normal shape and form.
* At least 25 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming with rapid forward movement.
* At least 50 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming forward, even if only sluggishly.

Hi

I just wanted to confirm what FJL said - unfortunately male factor problems aren't easier to treat.

Just wondered how your test was done? Was the sample done at home and taken in for analysis? We conceived using ICSI (IVF) with sperm motility problems. DH did two tests at home and took them into the local hospital. When we went to see the fertility specialist he said these results were not very reliable because of the time to take them in and to test them i.e. it could affect the little swimmers.

Anyway DH did another test in the hospital (yup like every bad comedy movie you've ever seen) and that confirmed things BUT it was a lot more reliable because they test it straight away.

You could try things like zinc supplements and reflexology or accupuncture which I've heard have good results as well as all the things like the smoking and hot baths etc that others have mentioned. Also... no cycling!

Good luck

Helen
