Me and oh are separating and even tho I work part time I'm so short on cash as he would usually buy the bulk of the monthly food shop etc and just general things

We both own the house but are living apart. Some nights he stays here with Evie and some nights I do. We are in the process of sorting the house to sell it

Where do I start with claiming??

Any help will be very appreciated

I use this website at work which should give you a good starting point letting you know what you're entitled to.

https://www.entitledto.co.uk/benefits-calculator/startcalc.aspx

Citizens advice were really helpful when my friend went through a break up, she made an appointment to go and speak to someone and they helped her with a lot of things.

Start with entitled to, if it is all too overwhelming make an app to talk to citizens advice :)

Can u claim benefits if u own a house? I didnt think u could but not sure. Do what others said and speak to citizens advice they will be able to point u in the right direction. Good luck

It depends on which kind of benefit you want to receive. As you own the property and aren't renting you won't receive any housing benefit.

In terms of tax credits, when I split with my partner I called them up and changed it over to a single claim and as I worked part time I gave them my hours and income. It was sorted within a couple of weeks.

If you do need housing assistance you could approach the council but the waiting list might be huge! If you do rent privately once you have a tenancy agreement you fill out some forms at the local housing benefit office and give them a copy of the agreement and that's sorted again in a couple of weeks.

Rather than going to the CAB i would actually go straight to the benefits people. Book an appointment to claim the income support/JSA or universal credit if that's come in. They will then go in to everything for you.
Also book an appointment for housing benefits. Unless things have changed (which they might have done) you can claim for housing if you own your house, however you can't receive it straight away and they only pay the interest.
In my experience the CAB don't always have the answers - things may of changed in recent years but when i worked for the Benefits Agency i was forever having to deal with people who had been told the incorrect info by the CAB.
