My baby boy Seth arrived in the world on April 18th at 7:26pm, 2 weeks and 2 days early, after 31 hours of labor! My waters broke with no contractions, so I had to be induced. They ran the first round of pitocin from 12:15pm to 1:30am and I only went from 3 cm to 4 cm, so after mutterings of possible C-section they decided to rest the pitocin for 4 hours and try one more round. I had almost given up hope of a vaginal delivery, but thankfully the second round of pitocin worked like a charm! Luckily I had chosen to have the epidural after about 9 hours (even though I went into it not wanting one), so I still had the strength to push at 4pm - which I did for 3 1/2 hours! Apparently I did almost all of the work because my uterus could not really get up good contractions due to the baby's size. I had no idea of the time it took until they told me later. The baby was face up so the doctor had to reach in and manually turn him in order for him to finally come out. In the end I achieved my ultimate goal of vaginal delivery and a healthy little boy!
The doctor told me later that most other practices would have done a C-section because of the length of the labor, the fact that I had the Strep B bacteria, and the fact that I developed a low grade fever during labor -- I am so blessed that she was able to guide me through it safely!!! I chose this group of midwives and doctors because of their patience with labor and their lower C-section rate and am immensely glad that I did.
I had to have a blood transfusion afterwards due to blood loss and he went to the NICU with a bit of fluid left in his lungs and slightly low oxygen levels, but he is better now and will be coming home to us tomorrow.
He is a huge, long boy at 9lbs 8oz and 21.5" long! I'm so proud of him (he never showed signs of distress) and myself for making it through, and I thank God for this wonderful blessing!
