if say i wanted to give birth in a birth centre how would i go about it?

im asking you ladies and my midwife,

if u gave birth in one what was ur experience like ??

I'm going to one to give birth (hopefully). You just tell your midwife that's where you're going, and then ring them when you're in labour (same as you would if you were going into a hospital) xxx

I'm planning on going to one. Since my local hospital doesn't have a birth centre though I need to see the GP to get a recommendation to the birth centre I want to go to.

I'd say call the birth centre you want to go to and ask what the procedure is.

Hi ladies, I had my baby in a birth centre and it was brilliant, huge rooms and all with tubs and the midwives were all pro natural birthing and really encouraged me to stick to my natural birth plan, it was so much nicer than the delivery unit. I know for a fact they would never have let me push for 2 hours without intervening and Im pretty sure they would have given me an episiotomy which I escaped in the birth centre. Ring them for a chat and ask to arrange a tour.

I highly recommend a birth centre!

I had mine in a birth centre within a hospital. It was great!

The only little issue I had was when they sent me home without an internal examination. I'd gone in about 4 hours after my water broke just to check everything was ok, but because it was my first time they sent me home assuming things would take ages. I had only had mild contractions up until that point so I can see why they did it. But when I phoned them 2 hours later from home saying I really feel like I need to come back in, the midwife was trying to convince me to relax and stay at home as long as I can. We went back anyway, and it turned out I was 9cm dilated and going through transition!!!

Anyway they took us to the room, filled up the pool for me and the midwife was brilliant just guiding me through it. It was great having the freedom to move around as I liked - ended up getting out of the pool and delivering on a big couch type thing holding on to a bean bag for dear life!

Once baby was born and the placenta was delivered the midwife then left the room and just left me and my DH to bond with our little girl for what seemed like ages. They didn't rush us out and helped me and DD get latching and took good care of us until we were discharged 7 hours later.
