Before DH & I started TTC our first bundle.. who arrived earlier this month, I was on birth control pills. At my 6 week pp check up, I plan on getting back on some form of birth control. I really wish I didn't have to take a pill each day... however I want something "safe". I was thinking of doing NuvaRing but after some research I don't think that's a good choice..

So.. What birth control are you ladies on? pros and cons of what you're taking would be great! Thank you!!

Stalking too!

I was on the pill but have struggled to lose weight. The only time I have is when I've been pregnant! I stopped taking my pill 8 weeks ago and have lost 11lbs. I feel it is in part at least down to not taking the pill.

We don't plan on more kids and I am terrified of an unplanned pregnancy but I don't want to take anything hormonal that might disrupte the weight loss. I want to be my pre-mummy weight!

I had the Mirena inserted. I like it so far.

I've just had the mirina inserted too. I had it put in just over a week ago and still spotting so waiting til that sorts itself out to decide Whether I like it or not! x

We just use condoms at the moment. I would never remember to take a pill at the moment and don't want anything too long term incase we decide we want a third. If I was 'done' I would get the mirena that looks like a great option

I have implanon(sp) it's one that goes in ur arm and last three years. I had it before becoming preggo had it taken out to get preggo. I liked it the whole time I had in the first time. Don't have to worry about taking anything!:)

I have the copper coil, it lasts 10 years but it's relatively painless to get removed, I had it between having the boys and have it now.

Pros:

No hormones, I get bad PMT on artificial ones
Don't have to think about it
Feels safe

Cons

Can be painful insertion (I had it at 8 weeks pp and embarrassingly didn't feel it haha, I'm guessing I wasn't fully closed....!)

It can make periods heavier but for me last time this was temporary, after a few months they settled, I personally prefer to have periods to know everything is in working order.

Annual checks.

I know my list is longer in the cons but it's the best contraception I've had, it's the one that interferes with me the least. We will use it until hubby has a vasectomy.

Mirena for me! My history of heavy and painful periods (2 days off school/work with sweats nausea and intense pain then a further 6 days of clots and bleeding) meant the copper coil was not a good choice for me.

The hormones in it work 'locally', so mood swings, weight gain etc. are less common although can't be totally ruled out.

I'm about to have the mirena coil too. Didn't want to take pills and wanted something that was easily reversed as I want to start trying for number two before my daughter is one!

I've been really debating mirena. You always hear horror stories from people about the damage iuds can do. I also am looking for something not so hormonal. I was on the pill before dd and coming off it was horrid, so out of whack. Good to know the hormones in mirena are 'locally' effective. Anyone notice a difference with bf?

I had no periods at all while I bf my daughter but put this down to having the mirena inserted when LO was 10weeks old. Then 3 months after giving up bf (after 27months of bf) I got sore boobs and very light bleeding once a month. This hasn't got any heavier so I think that that will be my periods till I get the Mirena taken out.

I'm on Cerazette and have been both before and after I fell pregnant. I've had a few different pills but this works best for me.

Pros

* Better for my mood, doesn't make me mental unlike other pills
* No periods (I get very painful cramps)
* No side effects (in my case)

Cons

* Need to take at roughly the same time each day/within a 12 hour window
* Can cause breakthrough bleeding (the case with one of my best friends)

Also, just an add on. The pill itself doesn't cause weight gain, there's no proof of that. It's the added hormones that can cause you to feel hungrier. If you continue with a healthy diet and try and ignore the added hunger then there's no reason why you should pile on the weight.

Sounds like a lot of you ladies are on Mirena.. The scary thing is you hear horror stories about basically all the different types of birth control! I think maybe I will do some looking into this one and see what I find.. Thanks ladies!

This might be true but I am also happier now I am not taking it. I have been on it on and off for 13 years. Maybe I was experiencing the effects of taking it long term.

Interesting, because my midwife says its common to have quite heavy periods esp in the beginning, maybe since you didn't have a period for so long even when it was in place you skipped all that heavy part. That would be nice... Something to consider for sure

It's the copper coil that can cause heavy periods I don't think the mirena has the same reputation, you can actually stop bleeding on mirena. I had the copper coil fitted a few months before I got my period back (BF) and they were still very heavy to start, but settled :)
