Val was born on September 19th (Pirate's Day
)
I started out the 19th by going to my weekly perinatal appt for gestational diabetes where they monitor the tummy for half an hour and do a quick scan. Id been having little contractions for a week but hadnt felt any pain.
Then after that i went to my appt with my ob/gyn and he said i was 1cm dilated and could have him any day.
After my doctors appts i had lunch and went to take a nap around 2pm because i started having a little bit of pain from the contrations. I woke up around 5pm with very painful contractions about 3 to 5 minutes apart so i woke up "daddy" and took a quick shower before we left to the hospital.
Since id already pre registered we went straight into a room and a nurse checked me and said i was still 1cm dilated and had us lay around for an hour. The nurse then told us she would be giving me a pain med shot and send me home. She checked me one more time and this broke my waters. Nurse called my ob/gyn to get everything ready and we found out he was on a plane to a convention
.
After six hours of contractions my doctor sent in his backup and i finaly got some pain meds to relieve the contraction pains and help me sleep a little. About eight hours in i was around 3cm dilated and baby's heartbeat was getting slower. They put me on oxygen and turned me over on the side which seemed to help. The nurses started discussing a c section which made me very upset and scared.
A few hours later i was 7cm and recieved my epidural which to me felt alot like getting a cavity filled but in your spine, the medicine itself feels like a cup of cold water going down.
When i was 10cm i started pushing. After a few pushes the doc tried to use the vacumn but to no avail. The doc then cut me up a little and pulled the baby out with some metal forcep looking things. The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice. After a few panicky moments a could hear him cry and knew he would be alright. Im very grateful.
Thanks to the epidural, the delivery for me was painless.
