Blood thinners and birth

Hi ladies,

I am being consultant led in my pregnancy care and see my blood specialist at the end of June but I was wondering about how blood thinners will affect the birth of my baby. My pregnancy consultant never seems to have any answers to my questions, but my worry is not knowing about what will happen if I go into premature labour as my last pregnancy ended with me needing an emergency c-section at 29 weeks.

Does anyone have any idea what will happen during labour regarding my bloodthinning? I have been told not to do my injection if I feel I am or am about to go into labour, but other than that I have heard nothing.

Does anyone have any birth stories after taking Clexane or other thinners? Did you goon to have a normal labour? I know everyone is different but I think I just need a little reassurance.

Hello hun, I'm on 40mg of clexane per day for a pulmonary embolism after my last delivery in 2008.

So far my anticoagulant nurse has told me:

I need to stop taking my injections once I feel my first labour pain

If I have had an injection and then within 12 hours of taking it I go into labour I won't be able to have an epidural

If I need an emergency section within 12 hours of taking an injection they will need to give me the antidote injection which reverses the clexane

If I need an assisted delivery I will need to take my clexane for 10 weeks after the birth rather than the standard 6 weeks

So far that's all I've been told but I have my last anticoagulant appointment before my due date on 27th May so she might tell me more then and I'll let you know.

I'd also be interested to read a few birth stories from ladies who were taking blood thinners, hope you get some more replies hun..

Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know these things, I just feel like I am being kept in the dark by my consultants, I know it sounds silly but I tried getting an earlier appt with my blood woman and they said no point until I am 32 weeks. God help me I will be mad by then lol

Aww thats no problem at all, happy to help..

Until 32 weeks! Oh that's bad because they should be checking your blood every now and then and checking your weight every couple of weeks to make sure you are on the correct dose.. Oooh I don't get that at all.. Must be a reason I suppose, I'm sure they wouldn't say that unless they were ok with it..?

You would think I should be closely monitored, but it seems not to be that important. I am glad I am not a first time mum going through this with the care I have been receiving, I think I would be a quivering wreck, off the top of my head the last time I was seen by my blood woman was end of March and I havent been weighed since I went to that appointment. Think I might run in to boots tomorrow to get a weight check and phone it through to the hospital. I hope it havent gained too much I will update tomorrow! lol

I was on heparin all the way through my pregnancy with Poppy. I went into labour at 34 weeks when my waters broke at 7pm. Had had a heparin injection at about 9am that morning. I delivered at 3pm the next day, no problems at all with my labour, didn't have to have a section or anything.

I worse support stockings during labour but other than that they didn't monitor me any differently to anyone else.

I have never had a clot but there is a clotting disorder gene i our family which I carry. I haven't been put on any blood thinners this time round though.
