Tried this in the weaning and nutrition forum but didn't get many answers so I thought I'd give it a try in here too.

As the title asks, just wondering what other mums and dads gave their LOs to try when BLW?

I put some banana on her tray for the first time today, she didn't appear interested in it at all lol, but as her high chair is yellow I figured its coz it wasn't colourful enough for it to catch her eye lol!

She's really interested in watching me eat and has on ok grip (not brilliant but it's getting better each day lol!) and she's not quite sitting unsupported yet but is managing to sit upright in her high chair ok. Would you say this is the right time to try starting? I know the 6 month guideline is exactly that, a guideline, so I don't want to be trying her when she's not ready.

we started at 5m2w. with toast. fingers of sliced pepper. pizza base. bread with butter/jam/spready cheese. home made chips

I started with vegetables because I read somewhere (can't remember where) that starting them with fruit gets the used to sweeter tastes.

I first gave him really soft carrots and brokali, then we moved on to swede, butternut squash and courgette cooked softly. He had salmon on his second day and loved it and was ideal because it's so soft.
When we started on fruits we'd leave the skins on because it was easier for him to grip, it's amazing how fast he learned the best way to wat certain food. Melon was a favourite and great for when he was teething if given straight from the fridge x

Cucumber, watermelon, toast with dip (hummus or pea dip) spread on it, roasted carrots and parsnips were our first foods. Basically anything easy to grip in a stick shape that isn't too slippy was good. I found at first that banana was too slippy and she couldn't really get her hand around it to pick it up well. Now she loves it though!

She wasn't really very good at handling her food though until about 6.5 months and it wasn't til about 7 months that she really started to get the hang of eating and seem to be eating for the sake of it, instead of just shoving things in her mouth that happened to be in front of her. So give it some time if she doesn't seem to take to it quickly. It can take months before they're really eating much, but that's okay.

Thanks everyone! That's all really helpful stuff! We're gonna go with some broccoli and carrots today and see how she does!

I agree with the banana, bit too slippery for her yet!

BLW's biggest advantage for me is sharing your normal family meals so we did just that. My youngest actually stole a Chinese vegetable spring roll when she was 24 weeks old so before 6 months but she ate it all (yep, nice and healthy but she'd eaten half of it by the time I realised!), so the next day at lunch I did my usual lunch - rice cakes with cream cheese, some chopped fruit and veg and a dip I think, then for dinner that night I'm pretty sure we had cottage pie. The next morning she had Weetabix with me.

My youngest's first food was spag bol at 26 weeks. It was a bit messy but not much more so than my then 2.5 year old! Then porridge for breakfast, a small sandwich, yoghurt, fruit etc for lunch, the same as I gave my toddler.

Remember that BLW is about letting LO choose their own food from what you're eating... it's not really baby led if you offer 2 lots of stick shaped veg and nothing else, while you tuck into a full meal :)

Yeah I do get that Rachel, I do want to do that but my main problem is that it's just me at home at teatime and I don't eat my main meal until after she's gone to bed. My main problem is not getting chance to cook anything because at the moment she is very clingy, but I think I need to start cooking my next days meal the night before once she's in bed! Would make more sense than eating late every night lol!

Hey. We are aiming for blw but like you said, I am struggling with a clingy baby and rarely eat myself! We eat breakfast together ; toast with Avacodo or hummus spread on it, oatmeal with fruit, eggs, fruit, yogurt....

It's the other times I struggle. Also the last week my babe went back to shoveling food in her mouth and gagged so bad she vomitted and I nearly had a heart attack. So I'm more cautious now.... Which is counter productive to blw

I struggle with dinner - as of now hubby and I eat once she's asleep - 5 pm is too early for me. So I end up giving her whatever is on hand.

Same for me, Emilia is too fussy after 4.30-5 to enjoy being in her high chair so I have to give her her tea before that, which I find too early for me to eat mine really. I've tried moving her bedtime back but it doesn't work, she just likes to be in bed by 6-6.30pm lol!

We started this week with my Little boy and he has eaten what we have ha unless ours was unsuitable
Up to now he has had
Chicken
Potatoes
Broccoli
Carrots
Peppers
Tuna Pasta
Cucumber
Watermelon

How did your LO manage with the chicken?

So far I'm finding there's not much she's managing with but it's only been 2 days, she seems to be getting used to the idea though. So far she really seems to like banana butties and houmous lol, but not interested in any veggies lol! Typical!
