Has anyone done a college course in book keeping, either going to college or home learning course

Its something Im thinking about, there is a basic course (level 1), then theres level 2 and 3

Im just after abit of advice and insight to how hard the course is and what jobs there are with this qualification

My hubby works in a tyre bay and there is a chance that his boss will need someone to take over doing the books next year as at the mo his wife does them but they are getting divorced soon, Im just not sure I could do it, I used to do some account work in my last job and I loved doing it so maybe I should give myself abit of credit

I haven't done one but one of my clients is an accountant and she was telling me that some of the book keepers she has encountered that have done the home learning courses are really, really bad !

My advice would be to go to college if your going to do the course as she seemed to think the home learn ones are not good at all.

I have a bachelor's in Accounting...

There is tons of work in accounting worldwide right now. It's a great field to be in during a recession. It is a challenging field though nd definitely not for everyone. Just basic bookkeeping isn't too challenging. If you get into the more in depth accounting some of the courses are seriously challenging.

Home based courses are what you make of them... some will graduate completely sucking and other will graduate rocking. All on how you learn best and how you apply yourself.

Is the level 1, 2 and 3 course your looking at AAT? If so I did foundation level as homestudy then level 2 at college, which was only 2 hours an evening a week and the rest done at home and I'm looking to do level 3 as homestudy (kepp putting it off - need to get my bum in gear!). I can recommend this course as its very well recognised by employers and is a good stepping stone to a qualified accountant course. I also really enjoy studying at home rather than going to college as I can do what I want when I want and break things up myself. Some companies who do homestudy packs will send you out a programme of studying breaking up the modules into sessions. Good luck if you decide to go for it!

Hi, yeah it was the level 1,2 and 3 that I was looking at, not sure how many levels I would need to do just to do book keeping for one company but would be good to have all 3 levels, Im just not sure I could do it

I was looking at some home study courses, the one that is advertised on the tv and also at my local college which is cheaper and shorter (10 week course, 2.5 hrs a week) but I dont want to go to college really, much prefer to do it in my own time

Could u pm me with the name of the home study course u used if u dont wanna mention it on here, that would be great

Also, did u have to go somewhere and do an exam? what were the assessments like, apparently they are scenerio based or multiple choice questions???!! if I read it right :dohh:

Hiya Hun :) Ive done level 1 & 2 at AAT and starting a CIMA qualification soon.

I did the AAT through a college, but Ive been going over some of my friends home learning material (as a refresher before I start my new qulification) and it's really really simple explanations. It tells you literally everything at a really steady pace, loads of practice questions and everything, its brilliant.

Id suggest a copy of this book to start with ----------> https://www.amazon.co.uk/Foundation...r_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238413613&sr=8-18

Good luck :)
