Well first of all...WOW! I can hardly believe that I am pregnant...especially since this was my hubby and I's first month TTC and my first month off the pill....CRAZY!!!

As you can tell by my ticker, I am only about 4 weeks and 4 days along...VERY EXCITED, but definitely nervous and scared too! I have my first doctor's visit with my OB/GYN scheduled for 2 weeks from today.

Is there anyone out there who is pregnant and on medication for anxiety/depression? Per my Psychiatrist and OB/GYN's permission, I decided to stay on my medication due to the severity of my anxiety and OCD. I am very scared!! The small risks vs. benefits of the medication were discussed, but I am just a worry wart in nature and the thought of something going wrong because of medication is TERRIFYING!! Any HELPFUL or ENCOURAGING advice would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you and I look forward to getting to know you ladies in here for the next 12 weeks or so :D

First of all I want to say CONGRATULATIONS on your BFP! Second... your OBGYN has given you permission to continue taking the medication? I do have a couple questions...is the use of your medication ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY? If not, would it be possible to stay off your medication for at least the first trimester? Anxiety medication is usually a class of drug called Benzodiazepines and can be harmful to a fetus particularly in the first trimester. There is an increased risk of congenital abnormalities. I do not mean to scare you...but you asked! There are other forms of treatment for anxiety and OCD such as speaking to a therapist, which holds no hazards to your fetus. If you are really worried, try and seek out different types of treatment that do not pose a threat to your baby. Thinking about the risks vs benefits will only make your anxiety worse! This is only my opinion and in no way intended to make you feel guilty or bad about your decisions. After all they are YOUR decisions! Good luck with everything sweetie and again...congratulations!!:hugs:

welcome!! And congrats! It's such an adventure, trying to get your head around the fact it's actually happening isnt it!

Welcome and congratulation :hi:

Im sorry i can't offer any advice re your medications.... however i was always told that in your first three months you should try to avoid medication unless absolutly necessary xx

I can't offer advice about your medication (but if your doc recommends it and thinks it's ok, then I'm sure (s)he knows best?)

Just wanted to say congratulations on your pregnancy :happydance:

Congratulations!!!

I was on Oxazepam for anxiety attacks. But only took it when I thought was necessary. (breathing) Therapy helped a lot to control the attacks. So for me it wasn't all that serious, so I can't really advice you on that one. Just make sure you communicate well with the specialists!

Welcome and congratulations on your :bfp:

Thanks for your reply. The medication I am on is not a Benzodiazepine...it is an SSRI. Although there are risks with ANY medication, my Psychiatrist and my OB/GYN both agreed that for both mine and the baby's health, I should remain on medication. With SSRIs there are no risks of fetal abnormalities, but there is a small risk of a rare respiratory disorder, but it is so rare that I am not going to focus on it. Trust me...I have been researching my medication for MONTHS!! I even tried to come down off my meds and it was NOT A GOOD thing at all!! I am just going to be as healthy and safe in every other way that I can and trust God with the rest. THANKS!

Congrats! I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months :hugs:

As for your meds, as long as your doctors think its ok then things should be fine.

Hope2B--

I actually just recently went of Paxil (for depression), and this is a subject I have researched quite a bit.

The short answer to your question is that *most* SSRIs (which is often the class of drugs used to treat depression/anxiety/OCD etc.) are safe to take during pregnancy. In fact, studies have demonstrated that less harm is done to a developing baby from these drugs than comes from having someone who needs the drugs not take them. The stress and other biochemical things that go on in your body when you have a panic attack can be much more harmful to the baby than the drug you're taking to control it.

However, not *all* SSRIs are safe for pregnancy (Paxil is one that is NOT safe, i believe it is called seroxat or something like that in the UK). My guess is that your Dr. knows which of these drugs is safe during pregnancy and which isn't, and you should probably trust his/her judgement. But if you have any questions or concerns, or would just like further reassurance, I would recommend contacting your Psychiatrist as well. They often are the ones that are much more knowledgeable about these classes of drugs than the OB/GYNs.

If you would like more info, or just someone who knows what you're going through, please feel free to email me privately (sara[at]thepaynes[dot]cc).

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the reply. I visited with both my OB and my Psychiatrist...in fact I contacted my Psychiatrist the day after I got my BFP just to make sure and she feels confident that this is best. Again, thanks and I pray for a happy and healthy 9 months!! :)

:hi: welcome to baby and bump congrats
