I'm waiting to start my first round of clomid. I've been TTC for a year now with no luck. But my doctor told me yesterday they've been finding caffeine can effect fertility a lot more than they originally thought. Today is my last day of drinking coffee :( And as a nurse, this is not going to be easy. Ive read excessive caffeine can effect it, but now I'm told not even decaff or tea. Has anyone else heard anything on this?

I have heard of studies but Personally, I think it is hard to believe. I limit myself to one cup of coffee a day and try to stick to tea mostly. I am a night shift nurse and I think it would be impossible to cut it out completely ( before I was drinking about 5 cups of coffee a day). I work in the neonatal intensive care unit and I find it interesting that I am trying to cut back on caffeine while some of the "mothers" that have children there do much, much worse during pregnancy. I am starting to think life is just not fare sometimes and hopefully one day it will be our turn to have a miracle.
Sorry for the rant, good luck to you!

it seems like a well established fact that caffeine somehow affects fertility. to be honest am struggling with quitting coffee. I reduced it to one latte (from cafe nero) in the morning and some green tea when i get home from work. cant give up coffee completely cant start my day properly without it. but must quit, I know, not yet sure how as nothing else seem to work like coffee does

I gave up caffiene in January 2010 in preparation for my first round of IVF and I can honestly say it was THE hardest thing I have ever done!!

But after a while you adapt and get used to it. Don't get me wrong when I've had a really bad nights sleep it is a killer but you survive it because you have to.

I use Berocca Boost when I need a pick me up now. Not as great as a coffee but it isn't bad.

Good luck.

Found this website, hope it helps.

Nurse at the fertility clinic told me about that.

Luckily, I don't drink coffee and my tea is decaff and I have switched to caffeine free diet coke but I know that has to go because of the aspartame!!

I was just at my RE on the 22nd and he encouraged me to drink my morning cup of coffee. He said there is no need to deprive myself and as long as it is just 1 cup a day, it won't have an effect on fertility. If you drink 2+ cups a day, then it can have an effect.

Giving coffee up was tough. Like you I was a bedside nurse which meant a pot of coffee was always on, lol.

I actually did it an odd way. Instead of a strong Starbucks coffee, I went to a Tim Horton's coffee which had way less caffeine. Just as often but different coffee.

Now I'm down to one cup in the morning and I'm sticking with it. My Gynecologist said that's fine.

Since deciding to start a family I quit smoking. I really think caffeine will be harder to cut than smoking was. If I suffer too terribly (I know headaches are about to come my way) I'll grant myself a small cup when needed. But at this point I'm willing to do whatever it takes. My insurance doesn't cover fertility treatment so I'm paying full price for my clomid. Might as well REALLY give it my all!

i have to say every remedy have to be taken in moderation.

Over the past few months I have replaced my morning cup of coffee for a odwalla superfood smoothie and my ovulation jumped from cd 19 to cd 13.
so I personally do think cutting out caffeine aids fertility.
also caffeine increases the risk for M/C so its better to cut back on it now then to go cold turkey and deal with caffeine withdrawals once pregnant.

here are a few studys on the affects of caffeine.

Caffeine reduces fertility

Today is day one of no caffeine AND CD1 so I've replaced my coffee maker with my juicer. I usually do a lot of apples and carrotts for an energy boost. Juicing is great, I highly recommend it :)

I agree with hopingforit. I gave up coffee trying to conceive. Giving it up didn't get me pregnant. Later, my fertility specialist told me not to change my every day lifestyle to try to conceive, as long as I am being healthy and doing everything in moderation. For instance, I can have a glass of wine with dinner a few nights a week or a cup of coffee in the morning. But I shouldn't drink a bottle of wine every night or down a pot of coffee during my work day.

But sometimes it helps you mentally just to try and do something to help fertility, so if it's something you want to try, then my all means go for it. I actually have stayed off the caffeine, because I like not having to have a cup in the morning. But I don't beat myself up if I meet a friend for a latte.

(You should have seen my doctor's face when I told him I've been pounding grapefruit juice b/c I read it helps with fertility! Ha ha ha. Good luck.)
