hey everyone i was just wondering how u all got on with ur fs,i went for my first app on 9th august and had my bmi done (it was 40 eeekkkk) my fs ordered u/s,pelvic exam, bloods and holding off on hsg for moment.but when i asked,if there is anything wrong do i get meds,i got a straight no,not until uve lost all of ur weight.so im thinking about going to my doc instead as since that app ive lost 18lbs and i will keep going but surely just to get clomid or something my bmi does not need to be under 30 does it? thanks ladies xx

Hi

I have a bmi of 37 and my fs gave me Clomid but asked me to try and lose some weight aswell as it would really help ttc. I guess it's just different for each FS/GP. I've been trying for baby no.2 for 8 yrs and believe that my weight has been the issue (along with PCOS). I'm glad I was given the Clomid but I'm wondering if it will have any effect with my bmi being so high. I guess only time will tell.

Good luck with all your tests :flower:

thanks hun, good luck and i hope u finally get ur little miracle xx

Yeah I am afraid so it is down to each individual consultant what rules they set as to what they want you to do before they will give you Clomid. You may not neccessarily have to get your BMI down to 30 as if you shown your trying your best they may give you it before then, however for any further treatment they would like your BMI to be 30 so they want you to get to that first!

It is postcode lottery as some specialists are more lenient than others

Hi BabyC

I don't mind at all :flower: I'm getting treatment through the NHS. The NHS have a scheme that works with private hospitals because the waiting times are horrendous. I was lucky enough to be sent to a private hospital within the Western Health Trust.

My consultant never mentioned anything about what BMI I should be under he just said I should try to lose weight as it'll only help the TTC process.

As far as IVF goes I really don't know, I haven't gotten to that stage, however my consultant said if the Clomid doesn't work he will send me to Belfast to talk about IUI/IVF more seriously.

I'm 27 so I don't know what their age policy is. Have you been to see your GP/FS at all? They would be able to tell you everything you need to know

If you need anymore advise please feel free to PM me, I'll be happy to help x

I'm on clomid, I believe my BMI is around 35? I know it's different in the states though, they don't make you lose weight to be on it. And many women achieve pregnancy despite being overweight with the use of clomid. I think the main reason that the doctor don't want to give it to overweight women is because it's harder for them to carry and bear a child, rather than because it makes the clomid less effective. I might be wrong though.

You are right....I am from Canada and it's the same here. Overweight/obese women have a harder time carrying a baby to term healthily...higher risk of gestational diabetes, miscarriage and whatever else. My BMI is 31 and I had no problems getting the Clomid. Doc said that losing weight might help but it was no guarantee.

My BMI was just over 35 and i was advised that it needed to be below 35 before they would give me Clomid. There explanation was that its less effective in people who are overweight.

I am now below 35 so have been given it :)

i heard it has to be below 35 too! i am currently losing weight so that i can be assisted if needed.
good luck hun! xx
